I have a D7100 and am in the market for a good, reasonably priced [say abt. $500 or less] wide angle lens. I'm looking for suggestions as well as comments regarding the Sigma 10-20 f/3.5 EX DC HSM Autofocus zoom lens which I saw recently [for $449] and thought might be a good option.

Look into the Samyang/Rokinan/Bower etc etc line made in S. Korea. They are manual focus but a great value for money. I use their 14mm with my full frame Canon.

If you wish to photograph the night sky then you probably should go for the Tokina 11-16mm for its coma handling.

The thing about UWA glass is that you can find some really good budget friendly options available. I have purchased our UWA two each of primes and zooms. They were for Canon, but I helped a friend find one for his 7100.

Many people but a UWA then shooting a few times with out getting a skill-set, then it sold off. Id you can find one at side-walk pricing and learn how to shoot it you will be happy. What a friend it will be. Read reviews and shop for what you need.

A used, mint condition in the box Nikon 10-24mm on ebay are going from 590.00 to 650.00. Consider the Nikon, it matches your body, has very good reviews, and will be worth more than the Sigma down the road. $100.00 more for a quality product is not bad, and, you will get that $100.00 back when you decide to sell it over the Sigma.

I shoot with a D300 as well as a D7100.... I opted for a used Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6. Not as fast as the F3.5 version, but it filled the void I needed it to fill, which is a landscape lens for use on a tripod. Have used it handheld as well.... I was influenced by Thom Hogans write up on it...

I use the Sigma 10-20 with my Canon T2i with great results. Excellent lens at a good price.

The late Ernst Hass was once asked during one of his workshops which was the best wide angle. It was obvious that the person asking though that the answer would be a wide angle lens made by Leica since Mr. Hass was a Leica shooter. His answer was "the one that you happen to have in your camera at the time of shooting." Annie Leibovitz was asked what camera would she recommend and her answer was "do you have a cell phone?"
Cameras and lenses are only tools and they do their job when we do our job.
You could be very happy with the Nikon 35mm f1.8 or the lens that you just mentioned among many others.

Only about $400 over the OP's budget if bought new.... Still over $100 over budget with the least expensive used model...

I have the Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 HSM. It's very sharp with good contrast, and I recommend it. The Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 is a very good lens if you want a faster lens. The new Tokina 11-20 f/2.8 may be out of your price range.

Scott, I have a bit of a quibble with you on the used pricing. I am a Canon guy, but lots of that glass around at side-walk pricing. OP just need to take a long hard look, or through cash.

I went with Amazon's listing which was $609 & about $6 shipping for the least expensive one listed...Remember this is for the Nikon 19-24 that the poster recommended, not some other UWA.... I paid $350 for my Sigma 10-20 F4-5.6 used in mint condition on eBay complete with all the accessories...
