Don't have any experience with this particular lens, but 135mm will not give you much reach.

It seems to be a good mid priced lens. And with the super teleconverter feature on your camera you can stretch your reach to 270mm; not bad.
Thanks, CHOLLY, for the link to a very comprehensive review. I guess my take on the lens is that there is sharper glass in Sony's corral. If I were buying, Sony's omission of distance or depth-of-field markings on the lens might encourage me to look elsewhere. Just my 2 cents...

^^^Welcome to the new age of photography. :(
It is very rare these days to find a new lens with DOF markings on it. I guess with modern AF manufacturers don't think those scales are necessary anymore....
Still, I'd like to have them on quality primes... but it ain't to be. :(

If reach is important I shoot with the Sony 18-250mm zoom. I am very pleased with the quality of the image. I compared ratings on B&H before ordering and they also liked it. Not too big physically with a big reach. On the A77 you would have a 27-375mm lens. Nice all around for not a ton of money.
I used to use it for my walk-around lens and I liked it very much. As far as reach, about 200mm (35mm equivalent) is pretty good, especially when starting as wide as it does. In film days we would have been elated to have this kind of range, but today we're spoiled.
So, spoiled as I am, I opted for a longer, 18-250 class lens and settled on the Sigma 18-250 Macro - not for the macro function, but for the best reputed IQ of any lens in that class. I an very pleased, as pleased as I was with the Sony 18-135, I think, with the images it gives.
So, after my long answer my short answer to your question is I used the 18-135 quite a lot on an a77 and loved it. Good IQ, color, and no complaints. I just prefer something a bit longer.
