In addition to the win7 64bit desktop which hasn't received its download, I also have a laptop running win8.1 and haven't received a word about win10 for it. No icon, nothing.

I've got all the updates and I registered to get Win 10 weeks ago. Everytime I click on the icon it just tells me I'm registered. I'm running the same win 7 64 bit that you are. Maybe its just being delayed for some reason. If you get a good answer I would love to hear it.

I went through that with two machines, Win7 and Win8. It kept trying to install, but always found "a problem." I downloaded it onto a flash drive, and it worked fine. Now I can use that drive to update the second computer.

In comparison, every so often Apple installs a new OS automatically and smoothly - always for free.

Buy a windows 10 computer !!! Upgrading is 'possibly' fraught with problems - you may spend the next month searching for solutions to problems because current progs are not compatible or things just don't work correctly . Save yourself a lot of grief and get a new machine - IF win10 is available on the manufacturer of your choice .

I got a pop up screen from Microsoft this morning that said Windows 10 was installed and asked to click on the "Let's continue" button. I am somewhat at a stale mate on the switch from Windows 7.

I upgraded my W-7 pro to w-10 on 7/29 (original Dell Inspiron 1520, Window Vista Upgraded to W-7), so far so good.
I have no choice but up grading it, because Window will stop and no longer online support Window 7 in the coming future. Up grading it will give my computer a new life. I don't have to look for a new one any time soon!

This tool will allow you to make installation disk/USB image for installation. Also, it will allow you install from a download. This is microsoft link. I have already used it to upgrade a six year old compaq laptop.

I heard MS is going to support Win7 until 2020? I may be wrong? By then MS will have most of the bugs out of W10. They are probably working on a new version as we speak.

I had heard that they will stop after 2015, anyway, it doesn't matter to me now, it seems working fine for me. i will get a new one when my hard drive running out of room, I am using external HD for most of my work. I may consider a Mac.

Click on the link, click on 64 bit, click run, sit back and relax for at least an hour and a half.

I've got the same thing and my Gateway is four years old. Troubleshoot says it doesn't have all the updates. It's been updated many times by them automatically.

I'll let the dust settle and pursue it later.

No, there is nothing in my task bar.

In my experience (25 years teching, consulting) Gateway tweaks the Microsoft OS's more to their liking than any other MFR. When you say "they" update regularly, are updates coming from Gateway.

I have "fixed" a number of Gateways by purchasing the OEM software packaged by Windows (presuming Windows 7) and loaded Windows "clean"... not the Gateway hack.

You may be looking at that. Or, back up your drive, take your Gateway media and do a fresh install.

Underneath all that Gateway modification of the OS, lies a real computer that will run consumer OEM and likely upgrade to Windows 10.

First, I'd get the download that makes a Windows 10 boot disk or USB stick and load 10 clean.

Best way to do this without losing data and the ability to run what you have, would be to buy a new hard drive, Pull out the existing drive (match it as close as possible), put in the new drive and load the bootable Windows 10 disk. A NEW hd matching sizewise with the one in the computer should cost less than $100.

All manufacturers, when they license Windows from Microsoft, have the right to make modifications in the OS, and Gateway is the most aggressive. I've made a lot of money on Gateway computers... fixing and configuring. Not so much last few years as they have gone out of favor in the market and you just don't see them.

The biggest nest of Gateways I have ever run into was in South Dakota, where they ship new from and also where they have their huge refurb facility, at opposite ends of the state.
