I hope someone here can help me out with this.

My Sony DSC-HX50V shoots video in the AVCHD format, which cannot be viewed on an iPad without a conversion program according to the information I have been able to find.

Could someone please recommend a good and reliable conversion program that will allow me to convert the AVCHD format video to a format that will allow the videos to be viewed on iPads? I have a PC which runs Windows 8.1.

Many thanks!

I use Visual Hub. Work great for me. Don't remember if It is free or not, but I know I wouldn't have spent a lot. I'm able to watch all my videos on my iPad.

VLC Media Player is highly recommended, seems to do everything, and is free.

Thanks. I googled it but there does not seem to be a version that works with Windows.

Thanks, Jerry. This is the app I downloaded to my iPad and it does not seem to work with the AVCHD video format. At least that's what I understand from reading the info on their site. If I am missing something, please let me know.

This is frustrating. I have 3 really excellent videos of mama osprey feeding her chicks that I am unable to share via my iPad. Looks like I won't be using my Sony to shoot videos I want to share via my iPad until this gets sorted out.

Can you upload to youtube? If Youtube can read it then they would convert it, you don't even need to give it a public url. There are apps which would allow you to download the converted video. However if you want to share it anyway youtube is accessible to anyone.

Just wondering: With the purchase of the Sony, you must have also received some editing software. Will it export or convert to a format your iPad can read?

well only an idea for a quick fix, there are a number of sites claiming to convert this format be sure to search around to check the validity of their software, it can be malware. If you end up at a project hosted by sourceforge its probably safe and free.

If you check your video camera you should have mp4 as a format option which has more tools available.

this thread should get you sorted.

Thanks for your reply. There was nothing that came with the camera. However, you got us to thinking and we are checking into whether or not the conversion can be done with PSE13 and then transferred to the iPad.

Thanks. I'll check that. Normally, I do not shoot video and then transfer to my iPad, so this entire concept is new to me!

Sony makes video editing software that will convert AVCHD files into just about any other format you need. The cheap version runs $49.95 all the way to the Pro version at $599.95. Your camera will shoot MP4 type files. It's a matter of going through all the menus to change it.

EDIT: Before you do any of what I said above, see if you can find a program on your computer called Movie Maker. It comes with Windows. It might be able to import your AVCHD file and export it as a file your ipad will read.

PSE 13 - No, I don't think so, although I must admit I've never tried to open any video in PSE.
Premiere Elements will be able to open your video, and I believe also export it to a different file format. The computer I use to work in PrE is down just now, so I cannot check on that.

Thanks. I made an error when I said PSE13. I really meant the video program, which I do have. It will open and convert. What I was looking for was a way to convert it directly on my iPad so as to avoid that extra step. I do not always have the luxury of having my laptop with me. Plus, I just want immediate feedback.
I think we have it worked out now, thanks to a previous response. I'll be posting a big thank you in a couple of minutes.
Thank you again for your time and help. These things can get so frustrating and "complicated", and they should be so simple.

I, like Jerry, use VLC and it's a good player and as he said, it's really free!
