I'm thinking about getting an external hard drive. Need help

Today I just bought a new desktop drive. It is a Seagate GoFlex Desk with 3 terrabyte capacity. This should keep me for a bit.
Buckeye. This desktop drive is the kind that STAYS hooked up to the PC. It can be disconnected and taken somewhere else but it has an external power supply so has to be plugged into the mains and then into PC USB port.

So drive mean something that hooks up to a camera part and helps out the camera? I will get it. I WILL GET IT! (It's good to have a goal!!!

NO! Buckey. A drive (sometimes referred to as a hard drive) is always hooked up to the computer.
Your camera stores photos on a FLASH CARD. You then download those photos from the card to your computer and store them on the computer hard drive or external drive plugged in to the computer. Once you have done that, you erase the photos from the camera flash card so you have space to take more photos.
There are some new little drives that WILL plug into the camera but I will leave that for now until you get the hang of the DRIVE question.

Oh Boy Lad-------I can't wait to get home and do and learn! You have NO idea what your teaching and my "learning" really means to me. I have many books photography books at home--some very old, but many current. The problem is, I can't read them: I no longer know what they all mean. Really frustrating! So I do hope that all you are doing is not wasted to you!

No problem Buckeye. I am usually around on the forum most days and will continue to try to help as long as my 72 year old brain can keep coming up with some useful stuff.

Well, OZ, you working with a 70year old brain that has some tricky areas now days. Actually for some years, but at LAST I have help and friends and may actually learn something! And once I get back home, can start using my cameras again! What JOY!!!

Age enhanced! THAT's the ticket! As they use to say.70 is 70 on the pieces of paper. In my mind, heart and all it's a number. Actually has very little meaning--just a number. Shoot. We all got lots of 'em!

The exact brand or capacity of external drive matters less than having TWO of them, with everything on one drive copied to the other. Then, if one fails, you buy yet another, and copy from the surviving drive to the new one.

I might have some flash drives! I have 2 black ones and a new red one. I got the red one to put ALL my UHH in it. Maybe I will need another little black to put just the photography info you all are teaching me---like this right here.?

Hey Buckeye. The only problem with flash drives is that they currently only go to 32 gigabytes. That will store quite a bit I know but portable drives go up to 500 gigabytes and desktop drives are now at 3 terrabytes.
A terrabyte is 1000 x 1 gigabyte.
If you end up taking RAW photos, a flash drive will fill up real quick. RAW photos are big files.

Oh. I think what I have must not be flash drive. I have little black and one little red, but I don't know his English name, and am not home yet to let you know.
