Cambridge Dictionary describes LENS as a 'curved piece of glass, plastic, or other transparent material, used in cameras, glasses, and scientific equipment, that makes objects seem closer, larger, smaller, etc.' So lens is singular. Plural is Lenses.

Most people don't care about using standard English (written or spoken) and it's not taught in our schools and colleges anymore. If it isn't caught by spellcheck then it must be OK.

However, I recommend for those that may care:

1) The Elements of Style by William Strunk, Jr. and E.B. White,
Macmillian Publishing Co., Inc. New York (several editions)

2) The Harbrace College Handbook by John Hodges and Mary Whitten, Harcourt Brace & World, Inc. , New York
(also many editions)

Hey, this was just hammered into me by my mom, who was an
English teacher and editor. Folks used to believe in the Constitution of the United States but that seem to be obsolete now just like standard English. QED

SS, you are a highly intelligent guy based on my frequently respectful reading of your UHH posts. But in this case you are asleep at the shutter button. Not only can young people of today not spell, they don't communicate using proper grammar and syntax, and they can't make change for a $1 transaction. Want solid proof? The spelling and grammar here on the UHH forum is all too often laughable. And the plural of lens is lenses. /Ralph

I AM an expert... One = lens. Plural = lenses. When I see one lens spelled as lense I explode.

For a charming read on spelling and grammar (and life in the copy department of the The New Yorker) check out the recently published "Between You and Me: Confessions of a Comma Queen," by Mary Norris.

"Lens" is not a plural word. The word, believe it or not, is based on the Latin for lentil (lens, lentis), a bean that is convex on both sides as are most magnifying lenses. The word was coined around 1690 in the early days of optics. Here's the source for this information:

It depends upon how many you have. You may have 1 lens or many lenses. ! mouse 2 mouses. 1 house or2 hice. You may have 1 lens or 2 lice. But I hope you don't have lice. I think I'll stop now' before I get absolutely absurd,(oops I think I already have)
