Anybody using a Dell Laptop for CC, (PS, AI, LR)? I need to configure a Dell 17" (not Alienware) and not a touch screen laptop for my daughter for School...She'll be using it for her Art/AI and Photography/PS (CC) classes plus school work (I hope) $1,500 budget. She has an account with Dell and wants to finance. I think she is looking at the 7000 series. Any help/experience with Dell laptops appreciated.

I would tell her to find a model with an i7 Intel processor, 16GB ram, and a large hard drive. I'm sure if she gets one with those specs, it'll have all the other bells and whistles that she'll want like HDMI out for a monitor, USB3 for fast downloads from cards etc. Good luck.

Help her spring for a better 'gamer laptop'*. I priced a 32GB RAM, 8GB ddr5 video 2*1tb drives and 17" for just about $3,000.00.

I did not purchase it because of the weight (8.3) pounds, an issue for me. I have an Alienware M17x, same weight.

* Just add the difference!!!

Yeah I have an older Toshiba Qosmio 18.5" Gamer...paid about $2,400 when they first came out...now you can pick um up for as low as $1,200...great for graphics. I use it a lot for 3D Architectural renderings. It to is a bit to lug around. You like the Alienware though, yeah me too, just don't think she can swing it. We'll see, you might just talk me into helping her out, (then daddy gets to play also, LOL)

Have used a Dell laptop for 7 years now with minimum problems. I bought the XPS1530 urg the extended 3 yr on site warranty. Save any hassles and shipping if you have probs

While you are looking at Dells, take a look at Sager/Clevo - I have a number of students using them and I have been impressed with the build quality, tech support and value. They are built like tanks, and offer Alienware-like performance for less than the Alienware price. The NP 8670 with a 512 gb SSD boot drive, 1 TB data drive, and 16 gb ram on two chips (so you can add another 16 if you find you need it) and either Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 loaded will cost you about $1600. It also has a 2 gb vram discrete display adapter, so it doesn't share application memory.

Juust bought the Dell 17" 7000, i5 processor, 1TB HDD with 6 GB SSd (hybrid hard drive like this is standard!) 12 GB memory (I can bump that to the max of 16 cheaper by buying an 8 GB stick of DDR3 16500 memory at Tiger Direct...easy ten minute, no hassle plug and play), the screen is a full HD touch, back-lit keyboard, nice unit...$945 direct from Dell on line. (Daughter has last year's same model and do9es tons of processing with PS and LR as well as some proggies she uses in Linux.

One caveat....if you want to run Linux as well as Win, do N OT get Win 8/8.1....Linux won't install! Instead, install EWin 7 Home....works like a charm!

She wants at least a 17" screen cause she got used to using my Toshiba 18.5" Quosmio? What Video Card? Is it an Intel or Nvidia Vcard...at that price I doubt an Nvidia. Maybe...Also my other daughter bought an HP from BB, 1st thing I do before anything is make a backup. Then install anti virus software...(I use Eset), It found 240 instances of virus's and malware issues on it , brand new not even hooked up to internet yet. They told her to bad you didn't get the warranty from the Geek Squad. , you can pay $125 to have the Geek Squad fix it. Last time I shop there.
But thanks for the heads up on the Toshiba.

That's more what I was looking for, what happened to their (Dell's)web site, where you could configure the whole laptop...I saw the one you got but was trying to get it with Win 7 Pro, and I think yours is 4th Gen i7, I wasn't able to configure it for 5th gen i7 and no touch screen, Nvidie GC, max the Ram, I have to call them see what's up...I'd rather her have Win 7 Pro cause I know it's securities and her being in a public place...Plus she'll be on my network when home and I run all Win 7 pro. ( and to many complaints about 8, can't confirm, haven't gotten into it) Good to know about Linux issues with Win 8 though. Thanks. ...if you change memory, I usually buy from Crucial Memory. http://www.crucial.com/ Probably comparable prices with Tiger.

I know there's better out there, and Clevo is up there... I usually build my own desktops or use @Xi Computer Corp., but I'll only attempt minor repairs on laptops, the thing is, she want's/needs to finance, and I already have a business account with Dell...but I will take a look see at your suggestion. Thanks Gene...
