We went to a large retailer yesterday so my husband could look for a new laptop. Samsung isn't making them any more and we couldn't find much in the way of laptops at all. The sales person said they were not as many available as there were a year ago.

There are plenty of laptops, and high end laptops being made, but with the rise of consumer tablets etc. they are less likely to appear in large retail stores. The same is likely true of point and shoot digital cameras and DSLRs.

You could do worse than check out Dell's website. That would at least give you an idea of what types of things are available. There are other respectable manufacturers around, although Lenovo has been getting some bad press recently.

Actually, not true, but the higher end ones are becoming a little more specialized and the average consumer that mostly surfs the net, uses apps, does social media and plays music or video is frequently happy with a phone, tablet or phablet.

If you want a laptop or desktop that might be good for photo use try looking at the gamers' machines, they tend to be pretty high end and the requirements for serious gaming are not too far removed from those required for photo editing etc.

Good luck

Does Adobe make Lightroom compatible with "gamers' machines"?

A gamer machine is typically just a high end system with fast processors, good graphics and a chunk of memory and disk. It does not normally have non standard technology:

Check the specs on these against Adobe system requirements etc....

http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-x51-r2/pd

They even offer Adobe Creative Cloud as an option...

I am not recommending these systems or Dell specifically, just using them to illustrate an example....

Laptops and desktops are not on the way out. It is just that most who need/want one and can afford it already have one, or more. They are now well made enough they last years and are so powerful they get the job done in a reasonable manner (even though the latest may be even more powerful).
As a result they are now like the appliance business, not a growing booming industry. It is now a replacement, upgrade or "I now make enough I can afford better." industry. So the field is being culled and only the strong companies will survive. Unless there are a few break through technologies that make it start all over again.
Business experts call this a "mature" industry.
Most stores only carry a few of the better selling models (read cheap and mediocre or fairly good and fairly cheap). You want the high end stuff, go to their on line site or one of the manufactorers sites (mine is iBuyPower, a gamer, that has never played anything but angry bird, which I deleted out of boredom). It is 3 1/2 years old, I have upgraded the drives to bigger ones, I have upgraded the monitor, I may add a dedicated sound card because my Bose speakers feel un challenged. Otherwise it works fine for photo editing, surfing and watching movies when I don't want to hog the big plasma in the living room.

Do you really think computers are going away? You are in the minority.

I don't think so. If I just walk around the cubicles where I work, almost everyone has two big monitors. And I find absolutely NO ONE using an all-in-one. I suspect it is a limited segment of our society that this all-in-one appeals to. As for me, I'm not going to be looking for one.

I don't know where the OP was shopping, but I'd suggest finding a better place. My Dell all-in-one with a 21 inch screen is great for all my photo editing. I'd suggest you check out these Dell computers:

Charlotte,
Your question and concerns are based on a false premise. Computers and laptops are not on the way out, although it might seem that way if you focus too closely on current advertising campaigns. There is a growing market for the highly portable, multifunction computer/communicator and the manufacturers are competing very aggressively for their piece of the action. So the preponderance of advertising is aimed at this segment of the market. The well established market for full featured computers with large, high resolution screens has grown at a less dramatic pace. And since the clientele for that market is more mature and stable the manufacturers do not need to pitch their advertising dollars in that direction. But rest assured that computers and laptops are not on the way out.

There is no way desktops and laptops are on their way out any time soon.

It may happen in the future but for now the pads and the phones are toys in comparison.

I had not noticed that desk tops were going away.

Just bought a desktop. Had NO trouble finding one. ;-)

PS, some stores don't have a lot in stock but their online catalogues are loaded with them.

I do hope you are all correct and that they aren't going away. I will try the on line sources.

I actually had a " go to guy" build my last desktop because there was nothing out there with anything close to what I wanted for a dedicated photo editing computer, looks like gamers are going to keep our hobby alive.....alot of the componants that I could afford and worked well for what I needed ( grahics cards etc.)many componants were aimed for the gaming sector.......solid state hard drives are a must if your building a new machine....they are killer fast P.S I am 62 and my idea of gamming on computer is solitaire!
