I agree with SS -Pfeiffer beach at sunset and will also post a shot. If possible get to Yosemite only 3.5hrs from oakland. The upper altitude areas glacier point etc will not open til early to mid June but still worth seeing without a doubt. Talk your wife into more time!! Rich

And if you go to Pfeiffer Beach, you have to have lunch/dinner just a mile away at the Nepenthe; cliff side restaurant with terrace overlooking the pacific. It's our go to place at sunset when visiting the area.

Hi fellow Hogs,
My wife and I are going on a trip in April, that is going to take us up the coast highway. Years ago I lived in Santa Barbara but never took Hwy 1 . I am up for suggestions for places to visit and photograph between Solvang and Santa Cruz. Also any suggestions between San Francisco and Salt Lake. We will have around a week to make the trip, unless I can talk the misses into an extra day or ten (haha). Thanks ahead of time for your help!

You have to see Morro Rock in Morro Bay. And if you are there at sunset, the scene can be outstanding. And don't miss the elephant seals near San Simeon. April is a lean month of elephant seals. They have mostly gone back to sea, but many of the youth still hang around.

Highway 1 is a beautiful drive. It twists and winds and hugs the coast. Always beautiful.

Pigeon Point Lighthouse and Point Lobos State Park . Bryce Canyon is spectacular and most photo ops are easily accessible by car.

I like a lot of the suggestions by others as well (living in CA my entire 60 yr life so far).

Solvang Hwy 246 off US 101. (you might check out the mountains between Solvang and Santa Barbara along Hwy 154 bypassing part of Hwys US 101 / CA 1 and going through Los Olivios and Santa Inez, and then to Hwy 246 for Solvang). For wineries and horse ranches.

Santa Ines Mission (Solvang) E. Hwy 246 (in Solvang)

Mission La Purisima ConcepciĆ³n (Lompoc) W. Hwy 246 near Hwy 1. This mission is a bit hard to find info about. It is no longer an active Catholic Church (there is a parish in Lompoc). It is more a ranch with cattle and horses. The building are more rustic and in my opinion more photographic than most of the parish missions today.

Guadalupe Lake Off Betteravia Road (@ Santa Maria & Hwy 101). Water birds, dunes near by.

Laetitia Vineyard & Winery Have a picnic lunch on the hill top grounds and drink wine, and photograph the view. I took IR photos there once.

Oso Flaco Lake off CA 1 & US 101 via Division Street and Oso Flaco Lake Road. Sea birds, water plants, boardwalk.

Grover Beach / Pismo Beach / Oceano just off US 101 at Arroyo Grande. Take sunset pictures of the Pacific Ocean. Many chain and nicer restaurants along Grand Ave. I especially like the Thai Restaurant just East of the 101 and the Mexican one in Grover Beach also on Grand Ave. Sand Dunes along beach (part of the Guadalupe Dunes Complex). Long boardwalk. Just North-West of the area are Shell Beach and Avila Beach. I own a second home in Grover Beach so I am learning the area.

San Luis Obispo the pink Madonna Inn, the San Luis Obispo Mission. Junction of Hwys US 101 and CA 1. Restaurants and stores, especially book and record shops. Confusing parking though.

Continuing North on CA Hwy 1 (leaving US 101) along coast. Note, Ca Hwy 1 is also known as the Cabrillo Highway.

Montana De Oro State Park on a side road from CA 1. high Sea Cliffs, Hills, Tide Pools, Hiking Trails, Horse Trails, Pacific Ocean, Coastal Sage Scrub. Sea life viewing. Possibly including Seals, Sea Lions, Sea Otters, Whales, Fish, etc

Morro Bay / Morro Rock. Off CA 1 on Pacific Ocean. The Rock I understand is a Pluton (a failed Volcano). This one happens to be in the ocean. You passed several others as some of the hills in the area.

Heading N-W on Hwy 1 you will pass some small cute towns Cayucos, Harmony, Cambria.

As noted by others San Simeon & Hurst Castle Not sure if you still need reservations ahead to tour the castle. Like the Getty Museum the parking lot is a long way from the buildings. I believe there is a Seal & Sea Otter, etc. viewing point at the State Beach. Though I've never stopped at the Ocean side of the Hwy.

Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery

Piedras Blancas Light Station and Point

More tiny towns along Hwy. But I am not really familiar with them other than signs on the road.

As noted by others
Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park Definite photo op! This will blow your mind, a waterfall that empties directly in to the Pacific Ocean! Looks like something from Hawaii. This is McWay Falls on the McWay Trail that crosses Hwy 1 here. Hiking and camping as well.

More small towns that I barely know of. As you head more North from a N-W direction on CA 1,
Big Sur Huge Pacific Coast Red Wood Trees. Camping, Hiking, Big Trees, Food, Shade, Did I Mention the trees? On my only visit there so far it rained! Damn.

Point Sur Lightstation and Sea Otter Refuge

More locations and tiny towns that I don't really know.

Point Lobos State Natural Reserve I have not been here yet, but I want to. A place Weston and Adams frequented for images!

Carmel / Carmel By-The-Sea the Pebble Beach Golf Course of course, Carmel Mission, (Edward) Weston Gallery, the Ocean, etc.

Monterey Monterey Bay Aquarium. I have not seen the latest remodeling yet. But the original version was great. Monterey it self is a pretty good sized city.

Marina State Beach Camping on the beach. We did that once many years ago. Other than Ocean not much there.

Salinas City supporting agriculture of the Central Valley of California. Not really a great vacation place or cultural, i.e. Fresno or Oakland, CA. Sorry food industry.

This is the furthest North I've been on Hwys CA 1 & US 101. I have gone to San Francisco and San Jose via Hwy I 5.

South on CA 1 & US 101 break up and merge also again and again on Hwy 1 to San Diego.

Personally as much as I love the Pacific Coast and Beaches, I have spent more time photographically in the California Deserts. Photographically Hwys 5, 14, 395, 18, 66, and 40 come to mind.

Typical leftist answer. The illegals in California cost us over 15 billion dollars a year. When there is a report of a hit and run, who you going to turn to? When you call an office, press one for Spanish, press 2 for English. Ballots in over 20 languages. They collect welfare, get federal student loans, Section 8 housing, EBT cards, drop by an ER some Friday night and see if any patients speak English. Right now there is a bill pending to change the name of the state to either Northern Mexico or Mexifornia. Many of them voted illegally for Obama. Thank God I am moving out of this third-world state to WY. Everyone speaks English there. Your argument "we're all illegal aliens" is all 60's kumbaya crap. Have a nice day.

I'm not answering, I'm saying shut up or move. Guess who picks your food at a price that you can afford? Why would Hispanics vote for Obama? Browns and Blacks are not exactly friendly with one another in the slummy cities. I have a few Native American friends who might have something to say about who is illegal. This is a photo site anyway.

Agree! A Photo site. And the question was about traveling up the California coast. The National parks in Utah are spectacular, but they are not close to the trip in question.

Typical liberal. Facts to a liberal are like Kryptonite to Superman.

Hi
We have family in Ca. We visit almost every year. We have been up the Coast Highway to Hearst Castle. about 4 years ago. Hearst was the Newspaper guy. His daughter was kidnapped many years ago. Solvang is a beautiful little town. Lots of Danish Pastry shops. Music was played all day. Horse and buggy rides was the order of the day. And many wind Mill type stores. On your way to Solvang there is a place called Madonna Inn. It looks like a cave inside and has a Must see bathroom. Its strange. Big shells for sinks and a waterfall in the men's room about the size of a fireplace. If you go to the L.A. Arboretum you can visit the location of the old Fantasy Island house every Christmas they have a house tour. It was from the TV show. L.A. Arboretum , Its actually outside of Pasadena in Arcadia Ca. Santa Anita Race Track is also there. Huntington Gardens is in San Marino Ca. Hope you have a great trip !
