Is Apple worth the extra cost?

Hi Fellow 'Hoggers..This is probably going to be another "Ford vs. Chevy" or "Nikon vs. Canon" type of argument, but I'm looking for a photographers opinion. ...
I'm thinking about getting a new laptop that I can take with on vacations, etc. so I can work with my photos. I've been looking around a bit and I have to say I was VERY impressed with the Apple macbook pro, even though it was only 13 inches. The retina display is really incedible, but like all things made by Apple it comes at a price. It's at the very least, twice the price of an HP or something else comparable. For me to get that laptop, with the larger flash drive, the larger ram,and some software for photos and whatever, it's pushing the $2,000.00 window. I've never owned an Apple product and have looked at them before, but again,I got my HP desktop for less than half the cost of the Apple and I still wonder if I should have just gotten the Apple anyway.

First I have been a Mac User for a long time, but I have also used PCs. My opinion is that a Mac is worth the extra money. If you make a true comparison, feature for feature, memory, processor speed, etc., you are likely to discover that a Mac is not more expensive than a PC with the same specs.

My advice, go with whatever you feel comfortable.

I'm primarily a PC guy for historical reasons, although I consider the Mac to be a superior product in many ways. For me, it is the investment in software and various incompatibilities that would prevent me from going to a Mac. I don't know how much that affects you, but it can be a very significant issue for some people.

Good luck

I've run Windows on my Macs since 2000. The old PowerPC world's Virtual PC emulator was slow, but the modern Parallels Desktop running on Intel Macs is FAST. I gave up PCs in 2008 when I got a MacBook Pro with lots of RAM and disk space. I ran Mac MS Office and Adobe apps, and Windows Outlook and proprietary corporate apps, all at the same time. ZERO issues.

I built software for Windows (and a lot of other OS's) for 35 years but when I retired I scrapped my Window's machines and went with Macs. The motto among software developers who know both OS's is that "Apple's OS just works." I find that on Macs I rarely have to struggle to do simple things like I do with Windows PC's. It's not just what you're used to as in the Canon/Nikon debates. It's that Apple developers work under a much more integrated vision of a consistent GUI. Doesn't mean that Macs are perfect machines but if you want a relatively trouble free machine with an OS which requires typically 50% fewer steps to do basic stuff go with the Mac. Hardware-wise a Mac is a superior machine, much more consistently built because of the Apple QC focus. One can argue with Apple's determination to control the entire design and manufacturing process but you know when you buy an Apple product such as a Mac who is really responsible for it and how it will behave. That's not the case for generic PC's. Apple sells hardware and software to work together targeted to the ed and visual arts markets and it shows in how well their machines work for photographers.

I have found that Apple laptops don't last as long as PC's. They run very hot and are best used with a cooling pad. On the other hand, Apple iMacs are terrific, especially for photo purposes. They are vey quiet and reliable. Just my $.02.

I switched to Mac in 2009 after spending an inordinate amount of time updating my anti virus software on my PC. Cost is what kept me from doing it sooner but when I figured out how much I was spending fixing and replacing PC's I realized the Mac was cheaper in the long run. I really enjoy the ease of use in my Mac. I have a late 2009 Mac book pro loaded with soft ware ... Lots of it power hungry photo editing software and it's just trouble free. I'm saving my $$ now for a new Mac maybe in 2016 or whenever my current one slows down. IMHO it's more than worth the initial investment .

Many seem very much satisfied with their Apple products, myself included. I have an iPad and an iPhone. For computing, I stay with Windows machines. My major issue with Apple is the corporation, not the product.

I suspect you'll enjoy it, but as you say, it's considerably more expensive than a similarly equipped PC.

Beware of "false economy." Often, you have to purchase add-ons for a PC that Apple includes.

Having had my Windows 8 laptop's hard drive fail within a year, and the USB ports fail within the 2nd year, I finally switched to a MacBook Pro last month.
(Also got tired of all the updates and reboots required of Windows 8, anti-virus stuff freezing the computer from time to time, too frequent crashes, etc.)

There's a somewhat steep learning curve at first, but I'm now very glad I switched.

Thank you all for your opinions, and it pretty much confirmed what I was thinking. One of my bigger issues with pc base is the windows system itself. It seems there is always a new version coming out to "cure all the issues" with the current one, but then somebody finds a way to hack into it,or it has "unforseen issues"and they keep coming up with patches to fix it, and pretty soon another version comes out and the vicious circle starts again. The one other thing is,I've never heard of anybody that switched to Apple ever say they regretted it (though after spending all that $$$ maybe they would never admit it). And of course the other thing is how good all the Apple products work with each other. I don't know if it's the right move or not but my dream machine would be the 2in. IMac and I will probably start with the Macbook pro...thanks again everyone!

No: "Is Apple worth the extra cost?" "It's at the very least, twice the price of an HP or something else comparable."

Hope it works well. It seems like a well thought out decision, and at least while Apple is using Intel processors the migration is quite manageable. Best wishes!

I think there were one or two people here that have switched back to PC's...I guess they missed the abuse one gets by working with windows.
