I have a couple days coming up here where I will be laying over in Mobile, Ala. Love to take landscape nature and bird shots with my D7000. Can anyone give suggestions of possible spots and approximately what part of town they are in? Still haven't set up accommodations so I will wait for any suggestions before booking the hotel. Happy and Restful Holidays to my fellower Hoggers. May there be wonderful gifts under your tree that will releave GAS for a while. Sandy

Plenty of birds in/around Mobile Bay, plus the battleship.

West of Mobile, just west of USS Alabama on causeway, just east of Spanishfort is a under visited, under rated, lovely state park. Is in Mobile Bay, minutes away from downtown Mobile. Idea for landscape of bay, swamp, and distance city scape of Mobile proper.

Ft Condi, on edge of downtown. Extreme historical, very picturesque.

As for nice reasonable lodging, last exit heading west on I-20 before Mobile Bay, small town of Dauphin AL.

If you have the chance, visit Fairhope, but only if you are prepared to fall in love with a town.

I lived there for 28 years. Take Dauphin Island Parkway to the mouth of Dog River. Very colorful with great boats of all kinds, marinas, and sea birds galore. You can find many spots for good photography. If you go down there, ask for directions to the Mariner Marina and restaurant. You can eat the best seafood you will ever have on the deck at sunset and photograph to your heart's content. The Eastern Shore is nice, but very built up now.

Please forgive me, but having been a resident of Mobile and Baldwin Counties for the last 30+ years, I simply must correct some misinformation - and add some.

west and east are reversed here - the USS Alabama is EAST of Mobile and WEST of Spanish Fort; the "causeway" is US Hwy 98/90 and is a series of bridges which land jump across Mobile Bay; known as the "bayway" the I-10 bridge also crosses Mobile Bay

is a under visited, under rated, lovely state park.

This is Meaher State Park and offers a view of Mobile Bay. see: http://alapark.com/Meaher/
Meaher is on the south side of the causeway. Just across from Meaher on the north side of the causeway is the relatively new Five Rivers Delta Resource Center which offers views of the Mobile River delta. see: http://alapark.com/Meaher/5RiversDeltaResourceCenter/
This past summer a staff member at 5 Rivers told me that white pelicans over-winter there - the first I had ever heard this and I have not made it there yet this winter to check it out.

Also, traveling east from the causeway to Spanish Fort, you can access Hwy 225 to Historic Blakeley State Park. see: http://blakeleypark.com/

I have not yet been there, but fellow Hog Dixiegirl sometimes shoots there -- and loves it!

I-10 (not I-20) is the east-west interstate through Mobile. Daphne (not Dauphin) is the town on the bay immediately south of I-10 just at the east end of the Bayway (I-10 bridge over Mobile Bay). Dauphin Island is the barrier island in the Gulf and south of Mobile. Dauphin Island also offers great photo ops: on the east end of the island is Fort Gaines; Sea Lab; bird sanctuary; ferry across Mobile Bay to Baldwin County and Fort Morgan; LOTS of waterfowl.

if you have the chance, visit Fairhope

a lovely picturesque town about 10 miles south of Daphne on US Hwy 98; also has a pier overlooking Mobile Bay(take SCENIC 98)

, but only if you are prepared to fall in love with a town.

There is so much more -- but this should keep you busy for a couple of days!

Colored me upside down, and bass-ackward. You are 100% correct, and I have no excuse. If only we had a quota for mistakes, for surely I would have met my monthly quota in this one posting alone. Thank you for correcting me. At least I didn't place Daulpin Island north of Mobile, or claim everone wins at the Casinos in Biloxi.

Thank you for correcting my directions.

You had me confused for a minute. You must be standing on the north pole looking down, whereas I stand in the Gulf looking up!

And I should have added -- they are some excellent suggestions.

Great thoughts. I also have enjoyed short drive to Bellingrath Gardens, the pier in Fairhope and a drive down to Bayou La Batre!
