Broken Window Macro + set up

As I was walking my dog Jedi the yesterday I saw this box with a broken tinted car window, well I just had to go back today and shoot it. The images here are all HDR shot with a 10X close up filter, the tripod is the Manfrotto 190XBPRO and the 496RC2 ball head. Processing was done with NIK HDR pro and PS5.

Instead of buying a LCD hood for my display I remembered I had some old dividers from my old Tamrac Camera bag. Two dividers some gaffers tape and Velcro did the trick. Now I can spend that $20 on something else, like replacing the +4 close up lens I dropped yesterday and broke (it was only a few days old). Butter fingers strikes again.

Me too. Given the very narrow DOF, I would like to see this as a focus stack abstract.

Thank you for your interest in in my work

The best way to answer what HDR added is for you to see for yourself so I added the -2 exp of the HDR. As far as focus stacking this one that's not what came to mind when I visualized ("pre-visualization" doesn't make any sense) the images from this window.

Also I made a mistake in my original post and added two of the same shots so I re-posted it with the 3 finals. Please click on the other post.

Thanks again. David

Two questions: How do you like the Manfrotto 190XPROB? and what DLSR are you using with the flip out LCD monitor?

I also use the 190 and just curious about your experiences with it. Thanks.

Good Morning Shooter, the camera is a Canon 60D and I love it. The tripod I also enjoy. The horizontal center post is a must for the work I do. The only drawback is its stability in the horizontal mode, very shaky, so remote shutter release is a must. In the standard mode I have had no issues with shaking in windy conditions. I like its lightweight as well. Another essential for ground level work is knee pads.

What has been you experience with it?

David

Similar. For macros, I also use a focusing rail which adds weight and instability when using the horizontal setup. Overall, I've been satisfied with the tripod. I had misplaced my remote cable (I shoot digital with a Nikon D300), so I was using the 1 second shutter delay coupled with the 2 second self-timer, to minimize vibration. Finally found the shutter release.... I share your need for knee pads. My next "macro" purchase will be a right angle viewfinder. Nikons are kinda spendy (around $200.00). They allow you to look down to focus and also include a 2x magnification. Is the 60D fullframe?

No the sensor is 1.6 "c" however in live view on the LCD its close according to the specs, I can't tell the difference. Live view also has a 5X and 10 X magnification, and what I find quite cool is a level.

Tell me about your focusing rail? Do you have an image of the setup?

I purchased a velbon four way focusing rail from Adorama. I don't have an image available today, but I'll shoot my setup and post it on here in a day or so. I'm currently away from home. The rail has no scale, so I probably end up overshooting when taking images to stack. Essentially, I focus the first, shoot, advance the rail 1/2 turn and repeat... until I've reached the last focal plane I want in focus. It's not perfect... but I've spent my whole life "making do", so I'm kinda used to it. My next project: build a large format camera. We'll see if that ever comes to fruition. Even when not shooting for focus-stacking, the device is handy for adjusting macro compositions from side to side and front to back.
