Focus Stacked Succulent Plant

Here are some more focus stacked images. For these I used Zerene Stacker which is far superior to PS5. Other software used was NIK Define 2, NIK Viveza 2 and NIK Tone mapping on on the second one. I stacked 3 close up filters 1+, 2+ and 4+ onto a Tamron 18-200 1:3.5-6.3 Macro XR DiII lens. The last picture is the set up.

If anyone knows the name of this succulent please let me know. Needless to say I was intrigued by this plant which is all over here in Northern Baja, CA. I was told it has beautiful flowers when it blooms, so there will be more images to follow when that happens.

I am really impressed with the focus stacks on here. The succulent is beautiful in its detail and color. Looks like I'm gonna have to do some reading on this technique and give it a shot. Eric in Atlanta

How many images did you use and at what increments were they taken? Great detail on your images.

The first one was 10 exposures, #2) 12 exp and #3) 27 that is the easy part to explain. The increments were done as follows: Normally in the studio I find the closest part and I mark that on my focus ring or lens body then I find the farthest part of my subject that I want in focus and mark that part. On my Canon 60D I can magnify up to 10x on the LCD live view to make sure both of these are spot on. I do not visually focus each exposure in between. I discovered early on that I got confused and lost my place. Once I have the furthest and closest marked then I find a reference point on the lens which doesn't move and use that point to line up with the grooves on my focus ring. I usually use 1/2 of the space from ridge to ridge as an increment.

Now outdoors I ran into an issue (this was my first outdoor attempt) the glare on the LCD prevented me from getting a good read. I need to find some way to shield the LCD. So for this particular series I took many more exposures than necessary and then sorted them out later in LR or Bridge.

Consider one of the several models of the Hoodman LCD Viewer, or similar:
