Answer to my Dilemma..
Yes and no...
I learned that the 3100 is an excellent entry level camera with a good entry level lens and its up to me to tweak it for its best!
And my "take four" and pick the best has worked so far.
I was just expecting too much out of Auto settings, sometimes the dumb old Human needs to take over.
I can say one thing, my old Mamiya Sekor 35mm from the 50's took outstanding pictures without Auto.
Speaking of that I have a lightmeter I bought in Japan same time, it still works!(Japanese instruction book!)
We are just relying on Auto everything too much!
I think my feet are on the ground now so its onward to enjoying a fine camera!

Have had this camera several years.
Had a serious focus problem using Auto.
Just started experimenting with all the other settings.
ISO, Aperture and speed settings.
Any hints, tips, beware's out there.
I am a long time 35mm SLR user and familiar with all camera terms.
Thanks

I've had the 3100 for almost 3 years, and lately I noticed the images were looking soft, no matter what lens or settings I used. So I took it in for a cleaning, and now it's fine again. Hopefully that's all yours needs. And yes, it will hunt for focus if the light is very low or it's a low-contrast situation.

Mechanically has what is required.
Have tried AF and AS focus.
Strange, go to Live view, point at something, half press shutter..usually totally out of focus, just keep trying, if you are lucky it will eventually focus.
(Although not always perfect!)
This happens in all modes.

It isn't characteristic of the camera. One of my digital cameras is a D3100 and the auto focus has always worked perfectly.

I was using the Kit 18-55.
Now using Tamron 18 - 200 and no problems so far?
