Question about "corrupt" memory card

I've been having trouble with an 8gb Adata SDHC card that recently failed to capture several shots. Those shots that were captured, wouldn't download onto the computer, and I got a bunch of different error messages. I replaced the card with a 4gb according to some recommendations some of you made the other day. It's working fine. My question: is it possible to get the 8gb back to operating well through reformatting? I'm a little afraid to try using this card for fear it might damage the camera. In the past, I only erased the card (in the camera) after downloading - never reformatted. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks.

You won't damage the camera... reformat the card.

"failed to capture several shots"

Not knowing the camera your using it's rather difficult to say what the problem is.

Question
Is the card a class 4. A class 4 is good for a P&S, but not for most DLSRs. If it is then the card isn't capable of writing information fast enough. I would suggest either a class 6 or 10 for most DSLRs.

Make it a rule to incamera reformat every card before every new shoot.

Many people prefer multiple smaller cards over one big card so all your 'eggs' are not in one basket...

I was told the card was fast enough for the camera. As I recall, I paid quite a bit for it and assumed it would be fine for handling speed and many pics. Thanks.

This makes sense. I plan to invest in more of the 4gb cards. Thanks.

Vicki,
You can try to download from the camera, does the image show in the camera? If so it should be able to be downloaded, then once you get that done, reformat in the camera, this may realign the card.

I have now reformatted in the camera, but haven't tried using it to see whether it works. Keep your fingers crossed and thanks for the advice. - Vicki

Just an FYI, Delkin Devices has a great support center that can recover the majority of "lost" images...they also make some of the most reliable memory cards and readers in the industry.

If by class 4 you mean GB, then no, it's an 8GB. The card is labled "SD HC" and the seller assured me it was fast enough for my camera, a Pentax K-7. I have now tried reformatting in the camera and will experiment with it today to see whether that helped. Thanks so much for your input. - Vicki

If I continue to have problems after reformatting, I'll give them a try as well as look for their products. Thanks, Vicki

No, the 4GB is the amount that the card will hold. The class is the speed that the card will write or store the pictures that are taken. The faster the card the higher the class. I would get the fastest card that I could afford regardless of the amount that it can hold. The write speed is more important than the capacity of the card.

Great advice to use several smaller cards than one large one.
Several years ago one of my SD cards turned out to be a "copy cat"
And didn't work at all. Lucky for me I discovered it early and had time to retake most of the shots I took on my first day of Travel.

Another thing to remember. In discussions like this on another forum that I'm on, we discovered it's possible that one of the small circuits in your card has gone.

As you can see by the connectors on the SD HC card there are circuits to record, to upload, to read, etc. We've discovered that one of these can go bad so the camera can't record but the recorded data can be read by a computer. Could be this with that particular card.

As cheap as these cards are these days I just replace one that gives me any trouble at all.

Good Luck
