You've heard the obvious so I'll toss a couple of spots I have enjoyed. First the many, many alleys of grafitti art in the alleys of the Mission District. This area has drawn some of the best artists in the country dating back to the seventies. Some of the shops on Mission have maps of locations and artists and some descriptions available. Oh and if you are in or near the Mission around 3:30 go to Tartine Bakery for the best bread you will ever eat (trust me on this one as I don't employ absolutes in a wholesale manner). Another place that is interesting (google it) is the 16th ave Tiled Steps Project.

I would try and spend some time in the San Francisco Zoo. The gardens and Art museum's were very nice. Good for one day anyway.

Take the 49 Mile Scenic Route, designated with signs. It hits all the best spots. The views change depending on the unpredictable weather. Last week was unusually hot with very little evening fog. This week we might get showers (very unusual for August.)

Tip: don't take the Powell Street cable car. It's overrun with tourists. Instead, take the California Street line, starting near the Ferry Building, which is worth at least an hour on its own. The California Street cable car also climbs to the top of Nob Hill.

Another favorite spot is the historic Ft. Point under the Golden Gate Bridge. Great photo op. I always take our out-of-town visitors there. Early in the day is best for lighting.

Another great cliche photo is from the Marin Headlands, high above the Golden Gate Bridge, with SF in the background. This shot is no good once the fog rolls in, unless it's really low, in which case, you will be able to shoot an award winning photo. As I said, it's unpredictable.

So much of your photo experience will hinge on the weather. Don't let it get you down. You can still get some really cool shots. Just be prepared for overcast filtered lighting conditions. The Golden Gate bridge is way over photographed, but I never get tired of looking at them in any condition---foggy, sunny, cloudy, or otherwise. Unless you reserve your spot now, you won't be able to get tickets to Alcatraz---very popular tourist location.

Go through the Presidio of San Francisco...North of SF is the Point Reyes Light House...Walk across the golden gate bridge. Do not bypass Alcatraz and take a boat across the bay to Marin County for lunch or dinner.

Couple of days, whoa, where to begin, would do a sunrise on the Marin Headlands across the bridge. Would concentrate in the city, do Alcatraz. At night do Victorian Row/Painted ladies.
