Orton Effect using PSE 9

This is my first attempt at using PSE 9 to produce an Orton Effect image... from a single image. I know that is not the recognized method using 3 images, but you got to break free from the accepted sometimes.

Question: Did I achieve the effect on an acceptable level?

Additional info: I used Gaussian blur at about 40 pixels for the background and the magic wand to isolate the subject for sharpness. The soft blur around the feet nearly make it look like I photoshopped the walker into the street scene... NOT!

Idiot move of the day: I was so interested in trying this new approach that I used the original image...DANG, DANG, DANG!

60D with 70-200 IS f/14 1/200 ISO 4000

It seems that you did.
You may want to provide the original (after PP)

You do not have a copy still on your card?
Also, did you use a raw file then export to a JPG?
Oh, do you use disk-keeper undelete?

Not on my card. As soon as I checked that I had a copies in separate folders, including one in LR 3, I reformated my card in-camera. The original was a jpeg. I do not have disk-keeper undelete. I just noticed that my normal file copy that I worked on and saved is now that same saved copy in LR3.

I am new to LR3 and didn't realize it would change also. Got to figure out how to avoid this issue in the future.

Two ways:
1 ) copy all images into two separate folders (need tons of space but one can be considered an archive/backup.
2 ) every time you open a file, save it under a different name <File-Name-version>.

Come to think of it, check if PSE makes a back up of the original automatically, many software do... I think it does under [Developed] This is a hidden directory (on windows) if on a mac... No idea.

This directory is directly under the one you use to store your pictures.

If you are using Win Vista/7, browse to the file with Windows Explorer, right click on the pic, choose 'Properties' and then the Previous Version tab. This may save you.

It may still be there on your card. You can download free software to recover images from a reformatted card.

Does PSE 9 have the Orton Effect Guided effect as exists in PSE 10?

As I understand it a big part of the Orton effect is saturating the colors in the image. I don't know that will do much for this image.

If PSE 9 does not have the Guided Effect and if you'd like to see what it does and can reconstitute and upload your original I'd be happy to show you.

or one could simply go visit the website of the man for whom this effect is named.

Indeed! Thanks for that. Here it is for those even more lazy than me:

http://www.michaelortonphotography.com/ortoneffect.html

He notes that it was added to PSE 10 so also answers my first question.

It seems to have more to do with exposure and blur than saturation.

I wonder how much Adobe had to pay him to use the trademark?

Hi Canon .. there is a way to do this with only 1 photo. I have spoken with Micheal Orton personally and have been given permission by him to do it this way, call it the Orton Effect, and encourage others to do it also. He is a firm believer in experimentation with photography.
I took your photo into photoshop and did it .. I can show you what I did and explain the steps if you are interested.

Interested... what an understatement! I have been working on file recovery suggestions from other knowledgable folks on this thread and can't make it happen. Now, you kindly offer a way to understand the original intent of the file. I accept...I accept...I accept. Please share... on behalf of all of us.

MtnMan, carefully checked out the Guided section of PSE9. It is not there.... thus, it must be a newbie in PSE10.

LOL thanks. I did this in photoshop but it can also be done in Elements.
Open your photo... enhance in any way you normally would.
Then make 2 layer copies of it (ctrl/j).
Leave the bottom layer alone.
The middle layer ... in the layers pallette set the blending mode to screen.
The top layer .. go to the filters menu/blur/gaussian blur/ set to anywhere from 2-25 pixels. I only used 5.0 pixels on this.
Then in the layers pallette set the blending mode for the top layer to multiply.
Then go to the layers menu and flatten image or merge layers ... both do the same thing.
Go to the file menu /save as ... and ALWAYS name it something different from the original name... that way you will still have your original untouched.
