selling advice on my 5d

Hi all. I have a good friend who would like to buy my gently used 5d, circa 2006. It's only flaw is a fleck of something under the first rear lens of its 27-135 zoom which will require cleaning. This combo is seen on eBay in the $500 range, but I'd like to know if there is a better new camera in that price range that my friend could buy instead. I'd like to see him get the best deal for his money. He was an slr film camera user in olden days, but this will be his first foray into the dslr world. Not unlike myself, he is more artistically oriented rather than technically inclined and seeks that sweet spot between the two. Any advice appreciated.

Thanks, JS

Hello JS

Well you will be doing your friend a favor selling him the 5D at that price I wish I was your friend. Because from what I see on ebay for a 5D Canon are going for a thousand dollars or more. You are a great friend.

Not for the original 5D, they are available routinely on eBay for under $500.
The MKII or MKIII are of course priced higher.

I thought the same but since I'm throwing in the lens I thought 500 would be reasonable.

Joe, that's probably fair. At least he knows it's history. The speck will affect nothing.
And you both need to know that it could die ten minutes after he gets it, and you need not feel guilty about the future!! Good luck. ;-)

I see 5 D classics priced 300-700 body only. The price that you indicate is a fair price. Knowing the history of the gear is important - but if like me the worry of selling to friend is something else. That's the point that Sharpshooter is talking about. Many great images have been made with the "classic."

So curiosity, what are you moving too?

Why Sell it? The camera is a good unit. You will never get $500 worth of satisfaction. It will be gone in a heartbeat when you can keep the camera. After all, it still takes damn fine pictures.

Well, J.R....with the guidance and encouragement of many kind souls residing here on UHH....I took the plunge and bought a Nikon d800e with a aTamron 24-70 lens. If that weren't enough, on Wednesday I take delivery of big fat computer upgrade and an Epson 24" stylus pro 7890 printer. Now I'm a happy and broke bloke. Thanks for asking.

Joe, good job. With friends the issue is now the computer. You are it seems a man without excuse!

Suggest to your friend if he buys the 5 D to add the 50 mm 1.8, one refurbished at Canon is -100 usd.

I know a pro that is still using that set up and has nver had the lens off or sensor cleaned. J. R
