First shot is as taken - 2nd 1 is with a little more contrast
Canon Rebel XS at f/6.3, 1/1000, 75mm ISO 400
Anything to do different? Day went from bright sun to semi-overcast to overcast within an hour - 2nd shot is probably closer to what sky really looked liked as the weather shifted.

I find #1 more believable. If you want to improve it, put it through Photoshop or whatever PP software you have and set the white point on the "2" in "200." You'll be amazed at the difference.

I also own an XS and I've taken a lot of flack from photographers who knock this camera because it doesn't do good work.

Glad someone else is getting good results from their XS as I am - very nice work!

As to the photos. For me the first one, you're correct, needed some help. To me the second is just a little over done - pretty but over done. Perhaps a happy medium between the two... just my opinion.

Here's one of my XS shots. This young lady took some
coaxing to get this but after she learned to hold her pose while the shutter was open, I think it worked out very well.
She was 11 years old at the time - by candle light.

Jim

Why the unrelated post of a girl's portrait?

This thread is about improving a picture, not about the ins or outs of a camera.

Please respect the topic and do not post unless this request by the topic creator.

Thanks RMM - I did it at 1 as 2 made it look washed out - better?

Here is another ` 1st one as shot - second with 1 on levels as again 2 makes it look washed out to me
1/1328, f6.3 ISO400 at 110mm

If you could post the orinal, I can show you a much better result using levels and tone adjustment only.

(I do not work on thumbnails)

Both photos can be improved dramatically without being washed out. English Wolf is correct, results can be shown much better with the originals. You can ask for critique, i.e., what can be done (by you) to improve them, or you should make it clear that others can take a whack at it.

The ONLY thing I did to this was to apply a Curves adjustment by setting the white point near the top of the "200."

This second image took more processing. You were there, so you know what it should look like. I'll be interested to see what English Wolf comes up with for either or both of these.

Here is another 'correction, far from being perfect. The problem here is that you do not want to lose details in the mid tones and highlight. A generic level and tone change just does not do it for the details.

It would be best to create masks to protect the brightly colored areas (drivers, referees, flags and so forth) then tone map the image. Using masked layers would do it quite well BUT the image layers needs to be feathered back together to avoid a disturbing halo.

A simple version that can be acheived quickly with levels and tone maps

To check the differences, DL the images offered and flip them quickly between themselves using a program like ACDSee.

Yeah, I think #1 gives me more of the feel --- the chills and spills.
Setting a white point may add just a bit of too much pop. Try it and see.
Since you already have the rider isolated on a layer, maybe try applying the white check on that layer only to keep the sky muted as it is.

Was Jim McKay on site? Looks like something he would cover.
