While reading an article on Macro Photography I ran across this statement.
" On digital cameras there is often a Macro Focus mode which switches the auto focus system to attempt to focus on subjects much closer to the lens."
Can someone explain how this is accomplished?
(That is, what switches?)

This is most often true for P&S cameras with permanently attached lenses. The camera has a little "macro" button, represented by a flower icon. The button allows the camera to focus closer than normal, but the needed exposure often exceeds the camera's ability (too close for flash).
My Nikkor 105G has a switch, allowing "normal" range (0.5-meters to infinity) like a regular 105-mm telephoto, or "Full", which will focus down to 150-mm (6-inches) for 1:1 true macro.
In both situations, the closer focusing abilities were always there, just not available until allowed.

My Sigma 70-300 Macro lens has a switch on it for macro. Really it is more of a mechanical lever. It only will switch if stretched out to 200 or more. If it is switched to macro, I won't be able to go less than 200mm without switching back.
I think it allows the focusing element to move further when it is switched to macro mode. The biggest difference I see is that if in Macro mode I can focus on something as close as 3 feet otherwise I can't focus any closer that 5 feet or so.
Either way it won't do 1:1

My Dodge truck also has a switch on it marked "Macro". On or off, it also makes no difference to capture macro.
