I'm sad to see this plane fade into history. It was my favorite when I had to fly anywhere. Good article. The building where it was assembles was so large that clouds would form near the ceiling.

I remember, in High School, standing at a departure lounge at LAX marveling at how BIG a B-747 was up close.

I remember being at JFK in one of the terminals and looking "nose to nose" with a 747 and I was on the 3rd or 4th floor. An amazing sight.

Mine was at Ohare in Chicago, walking along and looking down into the pilots windows and then coming face to nose with a 747

When I was a kid in Philadelphia I used to think the Lockheed Constellation was big. Then I saw a Boing 707. It looked HUGE to a 10 year old. The 747 is a remarkable aircraft.

Flew on one to Hawaii 35 years ago, played bridge in the upstairs lounge. Great flight experience!

I flew one of the first Pan Am 747's in 1970 from NY to Paris. The commercial was filmed in wide angel and I thought I was going to die with all my photo equip. This was the film age. They served fillet Mignon. It was great and many, many more trips rounded out the 747 for me and my wife.

Lufthansa (Luftwaffe) used to train their flight crews in Tucson. I remember seeing the 747 for the first time lined up to land at the airport and it was so goddamn big, it looked slow.

I was about 10 when pres Eisenhower flew into the Marine Air Terminal at LGA. The Lockheed Connie was AF-1 Just a beautiful craft. There was no such thig as airport security then and I found myself about 20 feet from Eisenhower as he walked by.

I'll miss it too, but not as much as I would miss the Beach 18s that were operated by Flinders Island Airways.

VH-FID was made in 1948 and as far as I know it's still alive and well.

It's impossible not to like an aircraft that was built in 1948, carries Hostesses rather than stewardesses and has a better power to weight ratio than a Chevy Corvette. :-)

There's a lot to be said for those old planes (1937 - 1969) - like old cars.

Indeed Jerry.

37 to 69 is a long model run as well. The design
was refined over the years.

The "before" is how "FID" looked at Moorabbin Airport (Melbourne)the last time I saw her in 73
before I got a job in Western Australia.

Now... is self explanatory. 'togs' of both photos unknown.

Jerry, I don't think that the 747 will be fading away very soon! Boeing keeps on updating and upgrading these beauties for both passenger and freight use. They are up to dash 9 now. That huge building is where they also build the 767, 777, 787 and soon the 777X. It is just 10 miles from my house and we see overflights almost every day.
