I also went down the same road. My D70 is now my back-up, and recently bought a D5100. I still use the comp. to delete pix, and manually delete the pix from the camera card.  :)

We started with the D70 when it came out and then added the D80. The D7000 is now the prime and DW uses the D80. The D70 is always in the car for that "wow, I wish I had a camera with me" shot.

My first DSLR was a D70s... LOVED it!... However, I started having issues with it last year. Only use a 2G card..nothing bigger. And..could it be a shutter lock up? I went round and around with that last year, it had to go to the Nikon hospital twice! - It officially died on my last year. SO GLAD I have a back up! The D70s was a work horse camera for me...so well worth the money - at the time!!

How long have you had the camera?? Mine's about 4yrs old or so. I use 4g cards each for certain situations. It also is my back-up camera. No problems yet.

Erobin,
This appears to be a common problem with the D70 series cameras. George

I have a D70 and 70s, and so far, so good. I never remove the cards. I just download and reformat.

It would be interesting to learn what actually causes the card/pin problem. Is it too much in and out, bad insertion technique? One thing I don't like about those CF cards is that they can be inserted the wrong way - not all the way in, but I have to check to make sure it's oriented correctly. That's another reason I rarely remove those cards.

I'll probably get an Eye-Fi card for my D7000. The less contact I have with cards, the better.

Thank you for all your hints and tips. I did have my D70 professionally cleaned/repaired and still having the problem. I was glad to hear I am not alone; it is not me but the camera. Opus might have something there. I do click on yes to delete my photos after downloading them into my computer, not always deleting them in the camera. Am going to check on "refurbished" D90.

The problem is right at the 90 degree change of direction between the card socket and its backside into the logic assembly. The downward pressure on inserting the CF card causes the interface to become at best intermittent and at worst to fail.

Remember to always format your card, any card, in the camera before use. That is the only safe thing to do in regard to file structures.

BTW . . When my D70 started I to gave it up and went to a Nikon refurbished D90 from B&H and have had it for over a year with no problems at all.

Came like new and had roughly, 7,500 shutter clicks on it.

Now I'm lusting for a D7000 or the next iteration of the series.

It's nice moving along with new introductions and keeping an older model as a spare. I've done well buying lightly-used cameras from ebay.

After every picture I get the "HR" message. If I turn the camera off and on again, I can shoot one more pic. I have changed ScanDisks but no change. My friend with a D70s had the same problem. Has anybody else had issues with their D70? Were you able to correct it?

1. Make sure your battery is fully charged.

2. Remove memory card and put it back making sure the connection is not loose.

3. Make sure the contacts are clean, you can use a pencil eraser but make sure you remove eraser dust.

4. Format the memory card in the camera.

5. If all fails, use a different memory card.

Format your card. I was told years ago that formatting should be done every time a card is inserted, and that's what I've done. I also format the card after I download. And I format at the camera not at the computer, don't know if that makes a difference.

If you're going to use the card in the camera, you format the card in the camera.

When you download pictures via the usb cable there's an option to erase the pictures and format the card, I never do it plugged into the computer.

Yeah, that just doesn't seem right. I format before I do any more shooting.
