Is an extended warranty worth it?

Greetings fellow hoggers...
Well, I'm just about ready to pull the trigger and order my new Nikon d7100 body from B&H. They offer a "drops and spills" warranty..2 yrs about $125.00,
3yrs, about $175.00. Wondering if the insurance is from a reputable comany and if it's worth it. I'm also wondering if any fellow hoggers have used this service for a claim and how it worked out. I will be placing my order in the next day or two, and as of right now, the warranty is "in my shopping cart" waiting for payment info along with the camera. I'm thinking if I do drop the camera it will cost much more than the warranty cost to repair it, but at the same time I've heard horror stories about these type of companies. ..thanks for your opinions!

Just bought a100 macro lens today and declined the drops and spills warranty. Someone told me a long time ago that if you do a bit of purchasing and always decline the extended warrantys that you will be $ ahead in the long run. Unless your are unlucky or clumsy. I have always found these aftermarket warrantys very hard to collect from in my business(auto repair) Just my opinion

The extra policy might be good if you have a history of having this sort of accidents, but most consumer advocates say that these warranties are generally a waste of money. You might check your homeowners policy to see what coverage it may offer in this type of situation. Also, some credit cards give additional warranty coverage if you pay with their credit card.

I hope you'll enjoy your new camera!

For now at least, I've removed the "drops and spills" option from the order..not sure which way to go on this..I keep thinking whichever way I go will be the wrong way..not to jinx myself , but in the past haven't had any problems, but this will be the most expensive camera body I've ever purchased. .

I just bought a couple of months ago and did not get the warranty. I think it is a personal decision. There is a saying on this forum. The camera body is disposable, the lenses are forever. That being true, then in a couple of years you may be moving on to something newer.

I still have my Minolta 7000 film camera. Bought it many years ago and it still works great. Never bought a warranty.

The true definition of Insurance:
They are betting nothing will happen; you, the consumer, are betting it will!
Having said that, I have never purchased insurance on anything except home, health and car. Just my 2 cents worth.

Extended warranties are profitable for the insurance companies.

If your are careful its worth nothing. OTH if you are careless or just plain unlucky they could save you money, assuming the company is reputable.

Ask your homeowner insurance agent about a special rider to your policy. Mine covers everything from theft to flinging the thing into the ocean. Full replacement coverage.

I've never once got an extended warranty....never once regretted it. My rule of thumb has always been "Can I afford to replace this in a reasonable amount of time if it breaks?"

You realize don't you that you just screwed yourself by publicly asking this question? The warranty gods will now make sure that if you don't by the insurance something bad will happen, and if you do buy it nothing bad will. :D
For the record, I never buy extended or enhanced warranties and I can't recall any time when I have regretted that.

I don't bother with it...and I've got a rider on my homeowners similar to what others mention here. It's cheap and covers anything and whatever for any reason. Done.

Your best insurance for your lens is a filter on the end of it. If your filter gets dinged or scratched or chipped, you will be so happy to replace it rather than your lens. As was stated before, you will have more invested in your lenses in the long run than in the camera bodies. I keep my camera hung around my neck to reduce the chance of it dropping. Mistakes happen, but I believe most people will be happy saving the cost of the extended warranty and just pay for a repair in the off chance something bad does happen.

I will have to check into a homeowners rider now though...

I purchased a D3100 at a military instillation PX.They have their own extended warranty. I never bought one but the clerk pushed it. I relented and bought it.Just before the extended warranty expired the camera experienced a drop. Well needless to say whey repaired it. I thanked the clerk and extended the warranty even further. Based on some other posts I will look into a rider on my homeowner insurance. But I would advise to get something Good luck.
