WI Fi memory cards.
I have been looking at info on wi fi memory cards. I can't find the answer to one question. "While using a wi fi card and a wi fi enabled laptop, can I use the laptop as a camera monitor while shooting"
I don't use wifi, but I have tethered my D40 to my MBP. The camera's USB has to be set to this mode, and when set, the memory card is not used. I wouldn't think you could use it as you would if tethered - you certainly wouldn't be able to control the camera settings via the memory card.
However, if your capture/transfer software doesn't specifically allow it, you may be able to write (or locate) a script that would transfer new photos to the laptop.
I think I didn't explain myself well enough. I'm looking to use the monitor of the laptop as an extension of the sensor view as if the camera was tethered by a cord. The canon 7d has the software for this. I want to know if the wi fi card would allow the same view onto my laptop, or only able to down load after the shot.

As I understand it the answer is no.

As near as I can figure from the eye-fi website, you can instantly get the photo sent to your PC.
I see no mention of "Live View" going to the PC. It would seem to me that the card can only send what is written to the card.
The camera (ANY camera) is not designed to accept a command like for example "actuate shutter" coming from the SD slot.
If you install something like Magic Lantern on the card, you might accomplish something close to what you're looking for.
My guess is only to send information once it has reached the card.
Eye-fi will send files to a PC only through a local Wi-Fi router. It will send a file directly to an iPhone, iPod etc. It may be possible to send a file to a PC through some cell phone enabled hotspot devices.
My feeling is that the transfer is going to slow on all these if you are shooting big RAW files with JPG thumbs included.
And no mention of Live View in any configuration of the Eye-Fi cards.
You can not use your laptop as live view.
OK, I guess asking for everything is going too far. Maybe, in the future. for now I'm lucky to have the canon software and tethered cables. Thanks for everyone's coments.

on wi-fi as i read it, the camera takes pic sends to card-card then sends it to puter. nothing like setting up camera to puter tethered and have image apear on screen and you have controls of everything from puter.
Hello Shadow1284...

It's been a few years since your post and I am wondering if you have been able to find a solution that works. I have been checking out the Canon Wi-Fi Adapter W-E1, but as far as I can tell once enable it totally disables the functions on the actual camera. I am looking for a simple tethering solution to get rid of the wires and give me a bigger display (iPad or laptop) to view the images.
I understand the value and need for remote controlling the camera (macro or still photography), but not what I am looking for.
Any advise if appreciated.
