Has anyone ever ordered from 6th Avenue Express? The reviews seem overall good but people persistently talk about "Grey Market" items and not to order from them. What is that?? TIA for guidance.

Gray ( or grey) market refers to an item that was not brought in through the regular import channels. In the case of camera equipment, getting warranty work done could be a problem. Actually, getting any work done on a Nikon could be a problem because they won't service gray market items. They sell parts only to authorized dealers, so repairs could be iffy.

On the plus side, the equipment is identical to regular U. S. equipment, and you get it at a lower price. Still, I'd avoid it. Selling it could be a problem if people check the serial number with the manufacturer.

I couldn't find 6th Ave. Can you provide a link?

They don't meet my criteria for feedback to buy from them.

http://stores.ebay.com/6th-Avenue-Express

They have 18,000 transactions.... they've had 126 negative feedbacks, for 99.3% positive.

My minimum is 99.5%. The likelihood that they have something I can't get from a "face" sale, or another eBayer with 100% positive feedback is very low.

Gotta draw the line somewhere.

If they are also selling "Grey Market" which is hard to determine... no... would not buy even at 100% positive.

Your not getting a good deal through Gray market. Back in the film a friend of mine bought a 35mm Nikon from a NY store with Honest in its name. When he received it it was in a plain white box camera, Lens and nothing else. No lens cap, no body cap, no strap, And most of all no manual. He kept contacting them for a year before the sent a poor copy of the manual. Like it was made on an old copying machine. You only get what you pay for.

The difference between grey market and the good place price is usually not that special. I don't think it is worth taking a chance with grey market products.

Gray can be disappointing if you looking for that great deal. Nikon will not perform warranty work or for that matter service it.

Generally Canon's servicing is more promising and aren't as harsh but is it really worth it?

6ave is a seller on Ebay that is NOT and authorized retailer of any products. They buy grey market overseas, and import and sell them here. You will have NO FACTORY WARRANTY when you buy from them, only their "90 day labor and 1 year parts STORE warranty" as stated in their listings.

As Dirty Harry once said "Do ya feel lucky punk? Well do ya??"

Considering the seller, the prices aren't low enough to take a chance. I wonder how well that 30-day money back warranty would work. There are probably hefty fees involved.

Try a 25% restocking charge on for size. The fit is a bit TOO snug for me!

Years ago I got gypped when I ordered "official importer" light meter from Cambridge Photo and they sent me gray market. They also added a huge unauthorized "shipping and handling" fee. The meter shortly after needed repairs and I was SOL. The major photography magazines took Cambridge's ads for decades despite boxes of complaints about the frauds.

My credit card company offered no help.

I never buy gray market. And I deal with only a handful of mailorder sellers, with good reputations, like Samy's and B&H. I would never buy from a marginal company, but for those of you who do, better have it on record in writing that you understand what you are buying is the official importer full package with all proper accessories.

Out of curiosity, I sent a query (Is this camera(D5200) USA warranty, or grey market?) I'll be anxious to see what they say.

I checked the comments in feedback for the past 1200 sales. Some say cameras are grey market, others say they did not receive a manufactures warranty card, others say what they received was not as described. I will not buy from a seller that has these kind of comments, you don't have to as you can usually find a seller that does not have these kind of comments.

OK, got a response from them. Seems kind of "distracting," for lack of a better word. They didn't answer my question directly:
The response: "Thank you for your inquiry. This model will come with our store warranty which covers 90 days labor and 1 year parts for manufacture defects. No other warranty is implied. You will need to contact us for return for repair requests within the 1st year. Please let us know if you have any other questions, we are happy to help."

Looks pretty self-explanatory to me. How much do you trust THEM to take care of any issues?
