My D5100's Untimely Death

Yesterday I placed my D5100 on top of a filing cabinet momentarily when someone came into the office to ask a question. The end result was my camera taking a 4 foot header on to a Marmoleum clad concrete floor, flash first..... I've already ordered a replacement D5100 and am considering whether to attempt repairs on my old one myself (I repair laptops and tablets as a sideline) or send it in to Nikon. Can anyone tell me about their experiences having DSLR's repaired by Nikon? Can anyone suggest ways to help me protect my camera in the future? (Other than NOT doing something incredibly stupid as I did in this case! :? - I still get a little nauseous when I think about it... )

Its highly likely the case is broken and the camera will be un-repairable. You can send it to Nikon for evaluation, there will be no charge for this. If it cannot be repaired they will return it for free. If it is repairable they will email you an estimate and you can decide if its worth the cost then.

That's the 1st line of defense.... (I actually use a side carry sling) Unfortunately this was a rare instance when I was not using it. I was getting ready to attach it to a tripod. I do have another set-up that allows me to keep the sling mounting plate attached and also attach the tripod mount. I have a feeling that I will be using it in the future.

Had not thought of it.... Might be worthwhile to check with my insurer on rates....

I would have to suggest dumping that strap and getting a good one that attaches to the cameras strap lugs like they were designed for. That will solve that issue permanently.

My guess is that the damage is going to be pretty bad. I get the 'Press Shutter release again' Error message and it won't go into 'Liveview' mode. Externally the case appears to be intact but there is a slight misalignment between the flash housing area and the front cover...... Probably would not be too hard to determine if there is internal damage to the case in that area.... I may just follow your suggestion & send it in & let them give me an estimate....

Thank u, it was my favorite shot from Washington Dc. Unfortunately the shot was taken with a very old point and shoot and I can enlarge it any more than a 5x7.

Accidents like this are why I will never go "over the top" with expensive gear. My gear is good enough to get a great shot, while cheap enough not to mourn if something gets lost, stolen, or broken.

Mine D5100 fell out of the camera bag that I grabbed out of the car ( hadn't zipper bag) . Would do everything but take a picture. Lucky for me it was less than a year old and didn't look like it was dropped. Long story short send to Nikon , repaired shutter under warranty and returned 5 weeks later. That was a year and a half ago and still working like a pro.... My camera equipment is now insuranced but hope to never have to use it.

A short time ago I dropped my D300S about 15 inches. Minor damage was to the bottom corner next to the battery cover. Result was that I can't get the battery out. It's currently in to Nikon for repair. Estimate to repair? $324.00 You should be prepared to pay at least that amount with Nikon.
