Swear not by the moon...

"O, swear not by the moon, th' inconstant moon..." (Juliet)

There is no light pollution here. None whatsoever. A perfect opportunity with my new 600mm (35 equiv) tele. But the image is not sharp— not nearly as sharp as the one I recently shot with a 400mm. Haven't figured where the gremlin is yet, but I'll get onto him. Meanwhile the prairie moon rolls on in its splendor. I suspect I will get another chance if I'm worthy.

(Tripod, manual focus, timer release.)

Very nice!!! You just missed the focus by a little. Have you done any post to it yet? If you add a little definition, contrast, brighten it a bit and sharpen it some, you can get a lot of details to come out.

Thanks, Erv, for the good comments and tips. I did a wee bit of post, right along the lines you suggest. Too late tonight but t'row, if it's clear, I'm going to try again with a little less initial exposure as the frame looks a little fat to me.

As for focus, I used the mag-frame and thought I nailed it dead on. I suspect there may have been a bit of atmospherics not so visible to the naked eye. (Any excuse will do!)

There's always tomorrow (night).

I took it in Aperture and played. Would you like to see? I didn't think about the atmosphere. But I would bet that is what happened. Because the detail is there.:):) I saw it coming home tonight and should have stopped for a shot. By the time it got above the trees in my yard it was covered. :(
Like I need a few more in the hard drive.:):)

Yes, Erv, I like your version better than mine. I also agree that there was some kind of "curtain" out there I was shooting through.

A few days before my 300 arrived I made a moon-shot with a 200, and it was much sharper and crisper than this one. Then, right after I got the 300 (600 35-equiv remember) I tried again and the results were lousy all around. While the moon looked great to the naked eye the shots were mushy and disappointing. Apparently the atmospherics need to be just right and I need to get better at judging them.

Thanks for your efforts.
