I have a new printer that I never opened that came with the computer. That was about 5 years ago. Never opened the box, still using my HP DESKJET 722C that was with my first computer about 10-14 years ago and still working like a champ. I wonder if I'll ever use the new printer? It's a Canon Pixma.....

You would probably find the running costs for the Canon would be much higher.

When in the sealed packs they will keep best - but the one in my printer (HP) now was put in at least a year after the S/B date and that was about 5 years ago!

Not a bad question re: dusty shelves -- How old is the ink before I buy it? My Epson Stylus Photo 960 is not exactly a commonly used printer any more so I wonder how long the cartridges sat on the shelf before I ordered them...

There's a reason ink carts are vacuum sealed. Unless the seal is broken, and air gets in, they should last a good long time unopened. I would not be surprised at 8-10 years if not more. I've just never had a reason to keep an ink jet printer that long...

I sometimes buy outdated print cartridges on ebay at a considerable discount. In my experience if they are sealed they are fine. Even fresh cartridges can go bad long before the use by date if they are opened and not used regularly.

Good question. My wife wants me to replace our pantry shelves, only 7 years old. Does this help? On the other hand I have found myself wondering what is the sound made by just one hand clapping. And you are thinking that you were getting too old.

I've found that HP ink cartridges do go bad after about 5 years. Usually the yellow and blue go first.

What? Why? And, where did this come from? What's the source?

When printing from a PictBridge compliant device, depending on the model or brand of your device, you may have to select a PictBridge compliant print mode on the device before connecting it to the printer.

So it really shows "best used by 20014"? It you meant 2014 then you shouldn't buy them last year.

I think it means, do not use until 20014.
