help with new camera choices

I have been reading and learning from all the postings. What a great thing to have access to. I want to thank you all for all the great information.

I have been using a D40 ( I'm a Nikon guy) and recently have been entertaining thoughts of upgrading. I am thinking (due to budget constraints) of the D5100 (which I have seen mixed reviews) and the D90. I am looking for any and all input and thoughts on recommendations of which to choose.

I like HDR and the D40 is manual only no AEB. I have recently started to shoot using manual settings (thanks in part to this newsletter) and I am loving the control.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated and Happy New Year to all!!!

The D90 - it is one of those cameras that comes along every few years that is considered as one of the best ever made in its price range. Yes, the 5100 has more bells and whistles but the 90 is a superb camera. Instead of the 5100, I would try for the 7000, either it or the D90. A feature I use quite often is wireless flash, something you can do with the 90 and 7000, but not the 5100.

Thanks for the recommendation Charles, I have been leaning towards the 90. I will look into the D7000. One of my main interest is HDR photography and I am in need of AEB which the D40 does not have.

Thanks again!

I have a Nikon D90 and love it. One of the main reasons I bought it is the lack of noise in dark areas of the photo.
It has its share of bells and whistles, but with so many newer models coming out all the time, You should do well
on the price.

I had recently upgraded from a Nikon D80 to the D7000 and LOVE it. I would defiantly recommend the D7000 if you can work it into your budget.

I shoot the D90 AND the D7000, and love them both. But I am waiting for the D7100 to come out, and my D90 will be down the road at that time. Nothing wrong with it at all, but I do love to switch to video sometimes (which is why I bought the D90 originally) and would like the same resolution from both my bodies so I could edit them into compatible movie formats. The D90 shoots 720p video and the D7000 shoots 1080P. Also, the 16.2mp sensor on the D7000 is scarey good! Lightyears beyond the D40, and all your lenses will interchange.
