July's Reading

I got suggestions for an article on nature photography and I'm throwing in a few extra readings on histograms for those of you who were "intrigued" by the alternate explanation of the histogram.

http://www.fredparker.com/ultexp1.htm - nature photo

http://www.ronbigelow.com/articles/camera-histogram/camera-histogram.htm - histograms & shooting raw

http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/histograms.htm - some people here of UHH hate him and others love him, but I thought it might be relevant information on histograms.

Reading RGB histograms http://www.sphoto.com/techinfo/histograms/histograms.htm

That should be enough to cover. If you have any suggestions, please PM them to me.

I was reading Ron Bigelow's article and something struck me...

"The settings for an image that is converted from a raw file are established in the raw converter. This is one of the big advantages of raw. Usually, the settings used in the raw converter are different than the settings that were in the camera when the image was taken -- this generally results in a different dynamic range than that shown in the camera brightness histogram."

I found this statement quite interesting. I've been using the histogram with my raw photos for quite a long time now,and although I haven't done any comparisons, the jpeg file has always worked well with my photos... has anyone else noticed a difference in this - he recommended bracketing as a solution but that is too much of pain for me. Any opinions?

Another thing I found interesting, I don't remember which article it was (and i'm too lazy to look for it at the moment,) was that the histogram you see on your camera will be based on a JPEG result even if you are shooting in raw.... did anyone else get that or did I read it wrong?

You have done a very good job in my opinion of choosing books/articles for reading. I'm at what I like to call the "intermediate advanced" stage of my photography knowledge and though I have read about most of these same things - it never hurts to have a refresher course. Thanx and keep up the good work. I wish I had some time to spend looking for articles or books to read so I could help out a bit.

Thanks for the positive shout out. I can always use a pat on the back. I just wish we could get everyone "going". Alas, I will keep trying.

Question for you - I downloaded one of those e-books that deal with basic lighting for portraiture (cost me $12). Could I just some how set it up so anyone who wants to read it can and then we could review it?

we really don't have anyway to set that up and honestly, I don't think we want to start into copyright infringement. I'm trying to select books with reasonable costs, and a lot of our readings are articles available from the net. If you found the ebook extremely helpful and a good read, please PM me the name and a link to the site and we will put it up for voting one of the upcoming months. But thank you for the offer/idea.

Yes I did read that, that's because the picture that your camera displays is JPEG, at least that is what everything I have read stated.

Has anyone read Fred Parker? I have been wanting to go out and try his charts out but the weather has been miserable here. It is supposed to be nice today finally so maybe I can get out and shoot. If anyone has tried them I would love to see your results.

I started the article and jumped down to the charts. A bit confusing at first, but on the second look, it seems pretty straight forward and helpful. The descriptions of the weather conditions (sun) is very helpful. Has anyone else finished this article?
