From what I understand, repeated editing of a JPG can eventually ruin the photo. Not sure how much it would take.

Yes it does degrade. Not endorsing this, but it can take quite a few edits and re-saving the same jpeg image before you see any practical degradation in the details. At high compression, this happens in just a few cycles. At low compression it takes a lot longer, depending on the detail of the image. In a class I taught I did that very thing to prove a point. Over 10 edits later I could start to see some, but wound up faking it with a mild pixelate as it couldn't be seen projected on a screen.

I always shoot RAW, so I have the control over the processing that would be done in-camera, just in case the camera doesn't quite get it to my liking. It happens. The RAW workflow is VERY fast, especially in Camera RAW.

Could I tweak some of the in-camera processing in Camera RAW, sure, but once the camera's done it in JPG, I do lose some detail. It's called "lossy".

I also save as a PSD in Photoshop with extensive use of layers, so I can go back and easily change anything I did. Like RAW, PSD is not "lossy" either. From what I understand, repeated editing of a JPG can eventually ruin the photo. Not sure how much it would take.

I make a JPG when I'm ready to send it somewhere.

Just my two cents worth. :D

I'm 100% with you on this, JPEG's straight from the camera have been processed, 'unwanted' information discarded and then compressed (lossy). RAW on the other hand has all the available information ready to be processed (developed) in computer.

Excuse my ignorance but can someone please tell me whether it is necessary to shoot in RAW in order to edit the shot later on in Photoshop? I presume it is necessary for HDR and maybe blending?
Shooting everything in RAW seems very time consuming to me though I presume the quality is much better.
Thanks.

It is not necessary to shoot in RAW for PS. You can PS anything from RAW through TIFF through JPG. RAW just gives you more flexibility to fix things like brightness blowouts and dark areas that turned black, etc. JPGs will edit as well but a lot of it is done for you in-camera. JPG was around and used successfully in professional and commercial photography long before RAW was available, so work with it if you like.

Until the last year I shot JPG only and it was just fine for everything I do but now I shoot RAW+JPG for my work and I'm leaning more toward RAW all the time - barely ever using the JPGs. Does it take more time to edit RAW files? Yes, but the more experienced you become with them, the faster you get.

Whether you have the time and desire for a learning curve on RAW processing is completely up to you.

Thanks for your helpful comment - I can see myself trying out RAW soon :) The big files and extra work put me off in the past but as my passion for photography increases and I keep looking for that perfect shot I'll want to have the best editing process as well. Picasa has served me very well up till now including all the creative tools but now I'm looking for "more."
May you find some great shots this week :)
