Our county fair is having a photo contest. I am considering entering one of these in the nature catagory. What do you think? How can they be improved?

My personal favorite is the second. I hope you don't mind one suggestion. I cropped it so that the bird is not so centered from top to bottom. This more effectively applies the rule of thirds and I think makes it a little more pleasing to the eye. But they are all beautifully done.

Thank you Mommy. The cropping helped definitely a good improvement. I am posting one more. I liked this one because of the way the sun was shining on the wings but the face doesn't show well.

Too bad he didn't get his face in the photo. Otherwise it is a nice shot.

Why must I always be the odd duck? LOL

I like the third one best... closer up, and still not perfectly centered.

The clarity is wonderful in all of them!
Good luck in the contest!

(and please let us know how it goes!)

Tilde thank you for looking and selecting a photo. You give good reasons for selecting number 3. Looking through your eyes and Mommy's helps. Thank you both for looking and commenting.

Nice photos. Try one of the following composition effects for a slightly different "feel".

Negetive Space - Using exterme rule of thirds to create a feeling of the subject being alone in the water.

Moving into the frame - Place the subject so that there is more space in front than behind, thus enhancing the feeling of motion

I like the first one best shows the action. If in doubt enter all three. good luck and most of all have fun with it. I included a shot from Belieze of some wild ones on the water there. They call them Mexican turkeys.

FUZMUZ, those are excellent shots and negative space works well. I went back to my originals shots and recropped them. Sending the results. When the shots were taken the pelican was to the right of center so there was little negative space in the direction he was heading. I used by telephoto lens at 150mm. I have a habit of getting as close to the subject as possible and try to crop out unwanted things that would have to be removed in post production. I am new to this and appreciate everyones imput. Thank you. I tried to repost the originals but couldn't find them, so I sent these. Thanks again

Thank you for looking at the photos and your encouragement. Loved the Mexican turkies.
