If your sales told you that he did not know, I would change the place where I am shopping. Of course if he knew that they would not work, he just wanted to make a sale and my advice remains the same. Check out the camera makers website and see if you can find out the answers there, if not contact the manufacturer.

The Nikon bayonet mount has not changed since the 1950's. all nikon lenses will work as manual lenses with no metering or ttl flash. If the d3100 is like the d40 it wont have an autofocus motor in the body. That means you have to buy their af-s lenses which have a motor. I agree if the salesman didnt know about the nikon advantage that almost all their lenses will fit, you are in the wrong store. Were you in a best buy, wally world ritz camera or where you in a real camera store?

When I was looking to buy my camera, I was told by the salesman at the camera shop that the Nikon I was looking at would only accept DX lenses. Weather or not that was a lie, I don't know because I was leaning towards the Canon anyway. There's no way of knowing if you're being lied to unless you do a lot of research ahead of time. I agree that the guy should not answer with "I don't know". My best advise. Take your lenses in with you and try them out. Any reputable camera dealer will allow you to do that. If they say you can't, then you don't want to buy from them anyway.

good advice randy. The thing is with the nikon manual lenses you wont get through the lens metering , flash or auto focus. Basically what you are doing is trying to attach 1960's technologhy to a 21st century body. Bite the bullet if you buy any dslr replace your lenses too. Save alot of moola buy your lenses used from adorama.com, b+hphoto.com or Keh.com. These are the three most trusted camera retailers in the country. by getting used not only can you get more lenses for your moneey, you may be able to get FASTER lenses for your dinero. I forgot to add if you have a flash gun for your fe2 DO NOT TRY AND USE IT ON YOUR NEW DSLR. YOU CAN RUIN THE ELECTRONICS. I always love this question. someone just shelled out a grand for a dslr but wants to risk it by using an old flash gun instead of buying one made for dslrs

All your lenses from your FE will work, but that will imply you are an old school photographer, as you will have to use those lenses in manual mode, and likely, with an exposure meter.

I use a variety of classic Nikkor lenses on my D7000 and D2Xs, for example, like my 105/1.8, 300/2.8 and so forth. For me, as an old school Director of Photography, this poses no problem. My meters, mostly Minolta, from spot to incident to color meter, are far more important than the internal Nikon meter when I pull out studio strobes.

Handheld meters work for film and digital. Knowing how to work with light and a meter makes for better photographs.

At the bottom, in the shadows, are show personnel and maybe a photographer assessing the challenge. Below, is a test shot from the same TV show in another one of my lighting challenges. The TV show was called "Shut Up and Model!"
