Sometimes you just have to take matters into your own hands.I have been experimenting with "splash photography" and wanted to capture a photo of a hand hitting the water. I could find no volunteers in my house so I did it myself. I used a small plastic aquarium and 2 150 watt outdoor floodlights - both coming in from the sides.I used a piece of black velvet material for the background. The camera was on a tripod and I pushed the shutter with my right hand as my left hand was hitting the water. The original horizontal photo was then rotated to a vertical. An interview with Abby

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I learned photography in the early 1970's -first camera was Pentax Spotmatic then Nikon FM1.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training. I like street photography, landscapes, stills and have been experimenting with fast shutter speeds ("splash" photography) and slower shutter speeds - (night photography and day time shots with neutral density filters)

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
I always wanted to know how these "splash" shots were made and decided to try it.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
Nikon d90, Nikkor f/1.4 50mm lens, tripod, plastic aquarium filled half way with water, black velvet background, 2 - 150 watt outdoor floodlights.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
I wish it wasn't my hand in the water!

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do? Probably fishing and boating.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
http://www.flickr.com/photos/knee_doc

Thanks, Abby

An interview with jrstjean

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
Been in to photography for about 15 years now.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
Picked up photography while studying at Harvard and my first internship was to photograph the dinosaur fossil collection at a science museum in Boston.
I was also looking for a creative outlet.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
Always looking for a creative subject and something interesting.
It was shot at a fair and there were many artisan and crafts people there. I like the look of the wet clay on his hands.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
Shot it with my Sony A35 and a 55-200mm lens
No special set up.. It was out doors

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
No

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Something creative...

An interview with Gryffon

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
In the 1950s as a child my uncles used to run a wedding photo business they had a darkroom in the outhouse. If I was lucky they would show me the old glass plate camera's they used and the huge glass plate enlarger (I still have it in my loft!)

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training. Carry camera almost everywhere in my pocket (Lumix, LX5) and just snap anything that takes my fancy.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
I thought my garage may offer interesting shots. Memories of all the sparks given off by the grinder inspired me to experiment.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
I had just bought a new 100mm macro lens for my Canon 600D to take photos of butterflies and other wildlife. But as it is winter/spring had to look around for other opportunities to experiment. So at night I rested the camera on a toolbox, set the self timer and took 5-6 different shots of me with a chisel on the grinder. Only one worked but I liked it the second it came up on the screen.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
I'm amazed that I won this competition and really grateful to all who voted. It has given me confidence to really experiment and follow my whims.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Lino printing.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Have a few pictures on flickr but have never had the confidence to share too many pictures.
Thanks you again for a great site that does give me the chance to show a few shots and to learn from others.
