If you vote for multiple photos, your voting point gets divided across them all.

“Low Angle” This is about as low an angle as I can get for this photo and a lucky night for me. It was taken from my front porch.

An interview with abby

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I learned photography from my mother when I was in high school. ( in the 1970's) First film camera was a Pentax Spotmatic and then a Nikon FM1. I now have a D90 and D800.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have become more serious about photography again in the past 18 months or so and have had no formal training. I like landscape, street, stills and architectural photography. For the past year I have been experimenting with fast shutter speeds ( splash photography ) and slow shutter speeds ( "blur" photography and neutral density filters ).

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
We are fortunate enough to live on the water and have seen some beautiful sunsets - I just couldn't resist getting my glass of wine in the shot.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
I used a D90 with a 10-24mm wide angle lens. ( 1/160 at f/6.3, ISO 200, focal length 10mm ). I sat the camera on the dock railing, very close to the wine glass and that is why the stem of the glass looks a bit distorted.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
2 glasses of wine!

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Probably fishing and boating.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?

While all are, as others mentioned and voted, great shots in their own right, I believe only the last one shown here is truly a low-angle shot as the contest intended, and should have won 1st place. Not because I thought it good, but because the contest intent was adhered to and it was the shot with the highest vote count with that intent in mind.

In addition, why have contest rules if they aren't adhered to when judging? I'm sure you'll all correct me if I'm wrong, but the rules say:

"everyone needs to submit a statement with their photo that explains the ‘who, what, where, why, when or how’ they went through to get it."

"Photos MUST include statement as noted above."
(the contest moderator capitalized "must" - not I)

That said, in review of the shots that followed the rules and the number of votes cast for those few, this is the pic that should have won -

Sorry to disagree that the photo above should have won because I have 25 just like it of my Great grand-daughter and don't think it's anything special. That being said I do agree with the point that there are multiple shots every contest that have nothing to do with the central theme of the contest---they need to be culled from the group. Maybe some folks don't get the idea of a "Theme" in the contest but when the theme is low angle and someone sends in a straight on shot of their dog it should be disqualified as others that don't follow the theme. Nothing is perfect and I appreciate the work that the moderator of the contest is putting in but this would be an easy issue to fix---if it doesn't coincide with the theme then it gets removed......

I didn't say it was my favorite, I was using the contest intent of low-angle and number of votes that were cast. I was not saying that I considered this the best photo. I do not. Also it shouldn't matter how many you have just like it... that doesn't mean it's not a good photo nor technically correct nor that it didn't meet the contest criteria.

Cheers

This is the one I voted for and it took 4th place so I'm happy with it. Thought all the winners were nice shots and adhered to the theme............

Yes, I agree - thats a good shot, I like that one too and it conforms to the intent but didn't follow the other rules..

I'm just saying, if the rules say you MUST do something and you don't then the entry should be disqualified as the rules state it will. If this is about learning and the experience and not necessarily the technical aspects then we learn nothing when those requirements aren't followed.

I'd even be OK with a panel of judges selecting winners otherwise contest integrity and purpose get thrown out the window and it turns into a popularity contest like American Idol.

I don't mean to upset anyone just wanted to ask why the rules aren't followed.

Just curious. There are apparently (2) Rating numbers. The first is the number of viewer votes and then there is a scond number in Brackets, ie. (2.01). What does this second, bracketed number mean or stand for? John
