Here's a video of the accident, in case you missed it:

What amazes me is the driver climbing out of his car .... with no front end left.

Thankfully, because of new safety barriers, these types of incidents, where car parts go into the stands and injure people, are rare. Many years ago I was seated only a few feet away from a girl who had a tire land on her, breaking her leg. That image is still etched in my mind.

I still have the Daytona Sunday paper from 1969 where I think his name was McTavich was killed. The front of the car was cut off behind the windshield and the car spun from the 4th turn almost to the finish line cutting off parts of his legs. Horrible thing to watch or see but it happened right in front of me.

We was a'sittin thar a'watchin the last of the race and then Ole Leon jumped up and hollered, "They good gosh a'mighty, lookey yonder a'commin" and then they wuz all a'screamin and a'hollerin and what -not and I'm a'tellin you, hit wuz just plumb terrible.
Glad for no fatalities and hope all are well soon.
Could have been a true catastrophy, yes??
Imagine how the drivers will feel today when they approach that stretch of track.

It doesn't look like NASCAR changed much in catch fence design since the Carl Edwards crash in Talladega 2009.

There are two reasons why people got to these races.
1- To sit/stand and watch cars being driven around in circles for hours on end till someone gets the chequer flag(kinda boring - waste of money and a day in your life)
2. To watch in the hope of seeing some spectacular crashes they would never witness else where in the real world.
It's only when these crashes invade the spectators arena they get on the news programmes.
As the old adage goes "Where there is motion there WILL be accidents"

Be carefull where you walk or drive...I have gone to Auto races sinc the 1950s...The only thing I do not like about them is having to wait to get out of the parking lot after the race is over...

@ Leither... That's your opinion and yours only. I've been watching/following Stock Car since the 60's and what you are saying doesn't hold true in my book. If you don't like watching them then by all means don't , but don't comment on it based on your opinion.
