YIKES! Sorry for your loss as well as your lesson, expensive indeed. But, if there's any consolation, we can all benefit from an occasional reminder about just how comfortable (i.e. negligent) we can get if we're not careful or if we get into some bad habits. Happened to me early on when I got lazy and wrapped a light jacket around a very nice Canon DLSR and stuck it in an overhead compartment. The compartment door opened as the plane began an ascent and, of course, out came the jacket and my camera. That lesson cost me a lens and wasn't a cheap lesson either. Thanks for sharing.

This a GOOD reason to NEVER put your camera atop your car before getting in, and while talking on your cell phone. The lens did not survive either. The only things salvaged were the strap, the hot-shoe cover, the battery and the memory card. I'll keep it just in the outside possibility that the shutter and/or sensor are still usable.

Oh.... that is just excruciating! So sorry for your loss!

Ah, the strap. Maybe it is to put around your neck so this doesn't happen. Not picking on you, just trying to inject a little humor in a very sobering event. There for the sake of God go I! - - Voorhees

Hope you had insurance!!
My camera & strap is ALWAYS around my neck! (even when on tripod or mono!) It is just a tad bit heavy for me.

Be carefull going the homeowner's insurance route. Depending on the claim investigation, underwriter's experience on similar items, and your claim history, it could easily push your policy into into a much higher rate tier for up to five years, or worse, your company could just drop you, although that is somewhat rare on just a single claim. Even worse, if your current company does either of these to you, it will be reported in the the Insurance industry CLUE system, which they all check for past insurance issues. So even if you do try to shop a new policy, should either of these situations happen to you, you still going to endup in the risk pool for a few years(higher rates).

Have you checked with your homeowners insurance to see if it might be covered?

I Feel for you. I had my car broken into last week and lost brand new Apple mac laptop and all my backups and software. Only in my vehicle for 15 minutes and hidden on floor under seat. 5 grand total. That hurts.

Wow, a new Apple Mac lost, worse the back ups at least losing the backups would be worse for me. Just curious what type of area were you parked in? Sounds like someone knew what your car was hiding.

Nothing survives from the top of a vehicle. When I was around 20 years old, had two small kids, I was in a hurry to take some food to my dad who was home alone and disabled due to my mom working a lot of hours. I put the iron skillet on top of my 63 chevy and was pushing the kids in the car (no car seats back then) and the rest of the gear. Drove off not giving a thought to anything but feeding my dad. I knew he loved fried fish and french fries, as he'd call it from being in WWII fish & chips. I get there and thought, where in the world did I put that skillet?
I'm driving home and I see in the middle of the highway my skillet and french fries and fish lying all over two lanes of highway. Needless to say, dad had to wait for lunch.
The next time, same deal other than I had to go to a meeting and threw my new shoes on top of the car to wear at that meeting. No shoes at the meeting, head home, I notice a nice penny loafer in one lane, another 20 feet or so, another nice shoe. Thinking to myself, someone lost a nice pair of shoes, how in the world could that happen? Then it dawned on me! Those are my stupid shoes.
I have learned my lesson, nothing goes on top of a vehicle!

That sucks... By the way, same thing goes for Fishing rods, gloves & coffee mugs... must have made you sick.

In fact I make it a rule to force myself into a habbit of putting my camera into my bag AND clipping it shut, rather then looking for a place to put it down...

Now i read about lightweight tripods and realize, I can't leave it on top of the tripod either after hearing horror stories about them being bumped into by people not paying attention or whatever. maybe a teather to a neaarby tree LOL>

Go full frame... LOTS of d800's on ebay, if you are careful , make a deal for it to be looked over by a shop, ... something. you should be fine.

good luck!

DON:T MAKE A HOMEOWNERS CLAIM AN ANY SMALL CLAIM! Funny how they think, big claims = ok, small claims= high risk.

Now, THAT is even worse! I would be so mad I couldn't see straight for a month! At least I can justify mine as my own stupid negligence, but when someone else does it it's far worse!
