Thanks Cecil. My emphasis is the sky AND cactus. Sky first, cactus secondary. My posts are geared towards learning from you and others so I really appreciate the comments. Since I do not plan on selling any of my photos I'll keep in mind doing what my eye likes best. You folks are pushing me to gain new perspectives on all this so I want to try things and find ways to make my pictures even more likeable to my eye. - - Voorhees

remember that the rules of photography are like the pirate code in pirates of the Caribbean, more like guidelines then rules. since the main subjects seem to be the sky and the cactus, i would have filled My viewfinder with the cactus when i shot the photo.Or in photo editing crop close around the cactus to emphasize the cactus. Also compose your shots the way you like them, your opinion is the only one that counts anyway.

Hello cousin, from one Voorhees to another good job.

Thanks for the comments. While my opinion is the only one that counts I want to learn more about what makes a picture appeal to a wider audience. I will try filling the view finder with the cactus next time and see how I like it. - - One Voorhees to another.

I think I like cropping out the left side and part of the sky, Something like this:

Sorry about the white band at the top, I had to use the snipping tool.

Thanks Gary. I agree. The square is not so good.
I used Photoshop elements to do the cropping. I did not see a way to crop with the same aspect ratio as the original. I'll do some searching to see if I can control that other than "by eye". thanks for the comment.

Technically, a square violates the rule of thirds. To be true to the concept an image should be proportioned 2:3 such as a 4"x6" or 8"x12". The Concept that the RoT comes from it actually based on the Golden Ratio (wiki it) that suggests that images using the Ratio are more harmonious and the farther they deviate the more tension added to the scene. So when you ask, "should I not center the cactus" it depends on whether you want your image to be more harmonious or one with more tension. You could center the horizon and the cactus for even more tension; add a square frame for even more tension. Try it you will see how the feel of the image changes.

I wish that the term "rule" was never used in photography because it you think about it, there really are not "rules" not even guidelines (regarding the RoT) It is just one of many artistic Concepts.

There are many discussions of this subject on UHH. If you are interested you can search "Rule of Thirds". I did a Power Point on the subject a few year ago that I could send you as well. Just PM me.

Because the site-line is not flat, but has bushes of varying heights and because the hill on the left is "anchoring" the photo nicely... I'd personally leave it as is!

Tilde is, of course, correct. In this particular photo the cactus is balanced on either side by the bushes thus making this particular composition technically correct even though the main subject is centered. Of course, my opinion is subjective, so maybe I am wrong. :D

Edit: Voorhees, just saw your two crops and I prefer the first....looks really nice.

IMHO as if anybody cares all of the variations are acceptable but if I had to pick one it would be Brian's version. I know not if it is a rule but to me a subject should look as if it is coming into the picture from the left. Get a photo of a horse for example and move the frame from left to right and having the subject right of the center line just does not, to me, look correct!

Leave it alone...it's perspective. It tells a nice story.

[quote=Voorhees]I like it cropped. I cropped with a 4 x 7 format and pushed brightness just a bit. David in Florida. I am not big on breakings proven photography tips. I have enough handicaps just taking a good picture.

Thanks Cecil. If I clearly like one composition more than another, case closed. I think the rules will be a help when I am undecided, which is fairly often. I hope to make uncertainty less often as I progress with photography. - - Voorhees

There are two rules in photography:

1) Do what you like.

2) If you don't like it, don't do it.

Please yourself with your photography. Unless you're shooting for a client or a contest, who cares what anyone else thinks?
