Adobe developed the DNG, the universal RAW format that works across all platforms.I'm not sure if GIMP has access to this, but it is useful. In the last 15 years think of how many RAW formats are no longer supported by the original camera makers or other soft-ware makers. Adobe supports more than any other that I've found, and if you convert the files to DNG they can be shared between people with different camera platforms while maintaining metadata and other original information.

Presently I use GIMP for PP and I'm interested in possibly purchasing one of the Adobe products, or any product, that has the same, or more, features as GIMP. I'd like to keep the price at, or below, $200.00. The learning curve isn't an issue. Any suggestions.

Well folks, thank you for all of your replies. I've done some preliminary investigating and determined that GIMP has all the features, and more, that most other programs have. I've decided to stay with GIMP, you can't beat the price, so I have more to spend on other gadgets.

I don't know how proficient you've become in GIMP. If like most of us, you're still on that steep learning curve check out a site owned and maintained by a fellow Hog- Kat Landreth. PareandFocus.com for $12 you can join and get a training ebook. that makes GIMP dead easy !

If you are an educator, Adobe offers very low costs for their software.

Just a user...

I used to buy Photoshop for $200 on an educational discount. A few months ago I noticed that the discounted price has been hiked up $50.

Very interesting.

Update - UPDATE, 2:40 p.m. PT: There has been clarification since this story broke. Adobe has not released the CS2 software for free. Instead, it has cancelled its CS2 license management servers, so for those with existing licenses it is now offering downloads that do not require contact with the licensing servers. This service is only going to be available for those with existing Adobe CS2 licenses, which will be verified when creating the Adobe account to download the software.
