I just ordered the Sigma 150-500mm DG OS HTM lens for my Nikon D600. Merry Christmas to me. There is no way I'd trust my current lightweight tripod to hold that combination.
Any suggestions that won't break the bank, Hoggers?
I suggest a Manfrotto, or a used Bogen (now owned by Manfrotto). Here is my 40-year old Bogen 3040 with an old style pan & tilt head. I still haul this tripod into the field.

I, myself, think the only "cheap" solution are sandbags. :-)
Other then that, a tripod and ball head and good ones ain't cheap!
The tripod AND ball head, should support one and one half to two times, the total amount weight of the lens and camera.
I have used the same lens hand held and it am heavy and on a long trek or shoot it's worse.

I agree with Douglass, Manfrotto or Gitzo. Or, if you've got lots of spare cash, 'Three Legged Thing' these are magnificent pods, but very expensive.
Whatever you do, do not scrimp on a tripod. Buy cheap - Buy twice.
Merry Christmas to you all.

For my D600 I am using a Sunpak Pro 523PX with a Oben BA-1 head. Works just fine.!!. It is supporting a 28-300 FX VR l
Your gonna have to avoid Carbon fibre and go for a metal one, you would also be better off with a gimbal head for freedom of movement and balance. That's a lot of lens to hang off a camera body. so you need to balance from the lens and if you carry it "hand hold" support only from the lens. these big babies are not like your average lens. Enjoy its a great lens

I use monfrotto 055XB and it supports my 7D with 100-400lens well. No problems so far but I am fairly new to the photography world. Got lots of good advice from UHH before I purchased it. Good luck with your search.

Hi Don B - Merry Christmas from the UK, and I hope all your D600 problems (yeah I've been following you !) are now behind you. The others are advising "strong tripod legs" and I wholeheartedly agree. To cope with your camera and big lens I strongly urge you to take a look at this UK made Gimbal Head -
http://www.lensmaster.co.uk/index.htm - this guy makes them in his own back yard (been there, met him and he's a gem) and he ships regularly to the USA. His prices, considering the quality, are amazing. I promise you, you will not be disappointed. Make contact with him and tell him Geoff from Nottingham sent you. Good luck.

Biggest I have used was the Nikon D3 along with its 80-400 -had no trouble on either my Manfroto D55MF4 or the Gitzo GT2581 I got from RRS before they introduced their own lines.
First let me ask what the problem is with a Carbon Fiber tripod? This is what I and many others use. It is light and strong and I have had no issues with mine even in windy conditions.
I picked up a Giotto heavy duty carbon fiber tripod on Ebay for around $400.00. It was rated at about 36-38 lbs or so. I added a Wimberly gimbal mount used on Ebay for around $300.00. This supports my rig weighing in at about 16.5 lbs with no problems at all. All together it is not light but it is sturdy and I have carried it around over my shoulder for many miles.
If bought new this combo would have cost at least twice as much. Needless to say buying used has been a big money saver as well as a necessity for me.
If you plan to make photos of moving animals or birds in flight then I would recommend a full gimbal head. I use a Wimberley on a sturdy Manfratto aluminum tripod. The full gimbal head will allow you to balance the camera and lens so that they will not flop down which can happen with a ball head.
I have the D600 and the Sigma 150-500 and just bought a Gitzo 3541XLS tripod with a Benro B2 ball head. Very sturdy and sufficient for the load. I'm comsidering a Wimberly down the road.
