From Manchester

I picked up my son at the Albany Airport last night, almost four hours late. He flew from Manchester, England to Orlando with a friend. The he flew from Orlando to Albany. The flight was late because JetBlue didn't have a plane available. They found one in Boston and flew that to Orlando - then to Albany. They didn't make any profit on that arrangement.

The man who drove my son from Ft. Pierce to the Orlando Airport was surprised by my son's Samsonite suitcase. It dates from the 1980s. He said he hadn't seen one like that in years. "You could get $500 for that on eBay." He was impressed by the large flip-up handle to pull it along on its two recessed wheels. Kuwaiti Airlines broke that off in about 1990 on a flight home from London. They paid to have it repaired. Back in the day, I put red tape on the sides so I could tell it form all the other similar suitcases. When it rolled along the baggage carousel yesterday, there was no other suitcase like it.

Years ago, I drove an old woman to the airport, and I was amazed at seeing all the luggage on wheels. Now, they all have four wheels.

Most of the restaurants they visited required diners to scan a QR Code to order and pay. Then, a human would bring the food. Every place they ate was very conscious of nut allergies. In one place, the cook came out and explained the ingredients, not being sure if nuts were involved.

My son showed me a YouTube video of an unusual restaurant where they ate. I said to him, "They're all young people. Aren't there any old people in Manchester." "No, the average age is thirty-one."

Nice story, I had one of huge Samsonite suitcases, yellow one, I got it for my 18th birthday from my father in what I wondered was a not so subtle hint. :)

Funny!

Except for the handle, this is like mine. The handle on mine is shorter, with a T-shaped grip.

Yes! I remember that style. When we were waiting at the luggage carousel, it was funny how must of the luggage looked the same, but in different colors.

We've somewhat come full circle. Back in the days of your son's suitcase, they were made of high-impact plastic with aluminum rims around the opening that had to align to close and no wheels. Then they came out with cloth materials that the airlines loved to rip and tear, then they added wheels to the back of the cases so they could be tilted and rolled along, now they have gone back to solid-sided designs that have high-impact materials that recover their shape when bent with heavy zippers and no aluminum trim that will get bent, and four wheels so a case can roll in any direction rather than just backward. I tried to talk my wife out of getting soft-sided luggage but she bought it anyway. On the second flight, a zipper got caught on something and put a rip in a front pocket. The lightweight plastic case I chose still looks nearly new.

They have to keep changing the design so they can keep selling.
