Canon 5D4 firmware update help

When I download the firmware update file it puts it in Photoshop. I can't seem to get it out of PS to copy it to my CF card.
How do I extract the file to copy it to my CF card for the firmware update. How do I keep it from downloading into PS?

Unfortunately the video does not show him where to download the file to. Which operating system are you using? YOu have to tell the computer where to download it to.

Just a guess but are you trying to open the file? It may go to PS because there’s a small image file in there somewhere. If you can see the actual download, right click and select “extract all”. Then direct it to your CF drive.

I didn’t use a CF card. I don’t have any more of them lying around. I had a SD card because they tend to be cheaper. In general, I buy CF and SD cards as a set. One of the features of the 5D Mark IV is that I can set the camera to record to both cards with different resolution. I have to make a pit stop at B&H tomorrow

I went to the CanonUS site, found the update under the Support section and clicked on it. A compressed file was downloaded into my Windows 11 "Downloads" file.

I then created a Canon 5D-MK-IV file in my documents directory and copied the download into it.

Then, I clicked on the file and clicked on "Extract". It extracted and created a *.FIR file and a PDS Instructions file.

Copy the *.FIR file to the root directory of a SDHC card, inserted it in my camera and upgraded the firmware.

It's a simple procedure.

Do we really need this update - that is, other than the features Canon specifically mentions in their notification, are there other features that provide additional security, or faster cycle time, or anything like that? I for one do not use the specific new features that Canon mentions in their notice. If anyone has information on this aspect it will be appreciated. Thank you. JimR

First start with a freshly charged battery. Then use a SD memory card preferably unused and formatted. (Confirm in camera) Download the zip file from website onto your memory card. Open the zip file and insert into the card slot. Remove other card. Go to the Yellow menu (shaped like a wrench) and go to the 5th Screen. Scroll down to last line and click on firmware. The onboard computer will search for the unzipped file. Then the procedure should begin. Follow the progress on the rear screen. It should take a few minutes. Please don’t turn off the camera.

Supposedly, the updated firmware will fix any bugs or glitches in the onboard program. I was once told that because you can transmit files (photos) wirelessly to cell phones or external computers, hackers could load ransomware and demand you to pay so they will unlock your camera. Whether or not this is true, I don’t know because I don’t use the wireless file transmitter utility.

I hope I have given you easy to use instructions.
But other online Ugly Hedge Hoggers like Bill Burkholder, (BurkPhoto) Paul H Rubin (PHRubin) and Paul Sager (CHG_CANON) are much more savvy than me by far.

You should also know that I did a weak rant at CANONUSA because I basically had to jump through hoops to load firmware onto my 5D. But the above mentioned Hoggers were extremely helpful.

In case you were wondering, I tried to download the instruction sheets onto this website but no such luck. It was blocked from copying. D@mn!!

There is a photograph in the download instructions that causes this anomaly.
I think that because you have PS on your computer the email download will automatically to your computer. Remove both cards. Use a fresh SD Card. Format in camera. Load the newly formatted SD card into a card reader or card slot in your computer. Send the download directly to the card in the reader or slot. Then unzip the file.

I was informed by fellow hoggers that Canon does this because the steps will change from download to download from time to time. While I am not an expert, you can PM me so I can walk you through it. I wish CANON USA would do that.

I lost the notice on my desktop, so I went to the canon usa site, went to support and followed the following procedure, after viewing the YouTube video.
1-I downloaded the .zip file onto my WIN 11 downloads folder;
2-I double clicked the .zip file and right clicking on the .inf file provided me with the option where to extract the files;
3-I extracted to my CF card (or SD), and the .inf and the .pdf files loaded onto my CF card;
4-I used the menu on the camera as "SCRUPLES" said above, and the camera updated the firmware.
I apologize for not explaining in greater detail.

You do not need to apologize. I would hope that a company as HUUUGE as Canon is they would offer a one dial phone number so we can call in and be told by a live person (in the United States) why the firmware is important and how to download the firmware. I am very fond of speaking to a human and having questions resolved in a prompt and courteous manner. I hate computer generated voices because they don’t allow any human connection. This is prompted by the reality of me being a pharmacist and always answering to the phone. While it can be time consuming, people need to know if their prescription(s) are ready or if there was a problem getting the doctor to prescribe a medication. Well, I hate when I call and am told to wait! I am sorry for my rant.
No you don’t need to apologize. In fact Canon better get wise because their products are used by humans and we demand a little more customer acknowledgement! There, I wrote it and hope that someone will take me up on this!
