I live close to the park and it has become so crowded it is impossible to enjoy. Was there a last week and the crowds in Springdale would make your hair stand on it end. Most were from California. I guess they like the crowds but I do not.

It is easy to complain about crowds, and we really like it best when we photographers can position ourselves exactly where they want to get the best image of a scene.

But we also need to remember that each person in a crowd is an individual that would also like to have a great position to make a photograph, even a cell phone image. Additionally, keep in mind that there might be one individual in any crowd that is so taken with an experience at Zion or Canyons or Yosemite or other national park of monument, that they then go on to do something absolutely stunning based on that one moment in a crowded park.

Or, would it be better if no one ever went to our NPs and the government decided it was a waste of money to fund the National Park Service. So there are challenging trade offs and we can't have it our way, all the time.

If you want to see a crowd, go to Yosemite. Must be people from Utah.

Many years ago, I thought that all those California (and Nevada, too) license plates I was seeing here in Western-State-Bucket-List-Gateway-To-Glorious-And-Incredibly-Photogenic-Places-&-Random-Nat'l-Parks-Too-Tourist Town (i.e., and a.k.a., Moab, Ootah [where earlier today we were advised not to go in July!--an admonition presumably directed at denizens of Utah, too? no? maybe just directed at folks driving vehicles with Cali (or Nevada!!!) plates?] meant that those who were driving those vehicles were from California. Okay. Yeah, sure; once in a while those folks actually are, as in they actually live there, visiting from California (....or Nuh-vadda....), but mostly they're not. 76.8% of those presumed California (and 89.537% of those who're driving vehicles with 'Vadda' plates) are people who flew in to L.A. or Vegas or S.L.C. or {quelle horreurs!} Denver from Georgia or Michigan or Kansas or Great Britain or --sacre bleu!-- France!!! and rented a vehicle. Which means --in one sense or another-- that they really don't have a clue, and are trying their best to realize their life's ambition (in a bucket-list-y sort of way) to do their utmost to muck things up for as many --without regard to whereever the other guy/gal calls home-- that they can encounter.......

Time and talking with diverse folks (sometimes, and sometimes with diverse people driving vehicles with Californicating --or NevvvvvAddled! plates) has, however, disabused me of what I earlier believed.

Which frustratingly includes those of us who actually live in these bucket-list-y places.

But I digress......... nice pic!

Lately there have been a good number of reports of increased crowds in national parks -- especially late- to post-COVID restrictions. Here in the northeast, Acadia in Maine was forced to restrict admissions last year. And add to it all, visitors don't (or won't) follow appropriate practices: Just this week was a report of a new born bison in Yellowstone needing to be euthanized when a "well meaning" tourist tried to help it as it fell behind its herd crossing a river, resulting in the herd abandoning it.

Or they can do like they have done with the WAVE here over by Page AZ. The only way in is to get a permit and someone buys us all of the permits so no one can get in.

We as a people are loving our parks to death. If you want my humble opinion, which you probably do not, people have too much free time on their hands. Oh, and by my visits to the park, many are from Japan, brought here by the bus loads. I am not against people enjoying what we have that is beautiful.

Nice try. Have you tried to go to Disneyland, not Disney World. You can go there and have a great time, that is in the middle of the week, get right in, hardly any lines, but at 5 p.m. that all changes when the people from CA get off of work. They have nothing else to do so they spend their night waiting in lines at the park.

Remember that you were one of the individuals making up the crowd that you're complaining about. Or should some people have more exclusive privileges to the public parks than others?

I can assure you, as a Californian, that Californian's have the same disdain for crowds as you do. But as more and more people are discovering the beauty in their own backyards, the parks are getting busier, which is the whole purpose of the National Park System. And I would bet that if you query the residents of the surrounding communities such as Springdale, Rockville and Hurricane, most welcome the influx of tourist since those towns exist primarily because of those same tourists (from around the country and the world, I might add).

Since I've retired, I've been to Zion more than 20+ times. Zion is a big park. Most of the visitors are located within about 100yds of the main roads, which is a tiny fraction of the park. If you want to enjoy the park and escape the crowds, do as I do and slap on a backpack and hike into the wilderness on one of the many easily accessible trails. It only takes a short while before you're the only ones out there and you get to see areas of the parks that most will never see.

Aside from your non-photography opine, That was a very nice image.

Very nice image Paul. Will not comment on crowds, we have our share here in Florida.

I was there mod-November last year, and no crowds! But it was cold!
