Watching Foreign TV

I began watching a TV series from a foreign country last night, and all the dialog was in that foreign language. The language is called "Scottish." All the actors spoke very fast, in a low volume, mumbled, and there was a lot of background noise. I'd understand a few words occasionally, but I thought closed captions would be essential. I clicked on that, and it was even worse. The captions were in Bahasa Melayu. That's one of the languages spoken in Indonesia.

I was able to follow the plot, but I know I was missing details. The series is "The Rig," on Amazon Prime. It's set on an oil rig in the North Sea, not far from Scotland. I watched two and a half of the six episodes. It's a sci-fi thriller. I'll finish it tonight. If you think you'll watch it, you might want to skip the general summary below. If you watched the comedy series "Schitt's Creek" on Netflix, you might recognize one of the actors from that series.

"The Rig is a British supernatural thriller television series created by David Macpherson for Amazon Prime Video. The series is directed by John Strickland, and is the first Amazon Original to be filmed entirely in Scotland. The series was released on 6 January 2023 and consists of six episodes."

Summary -
A strange fog engulfs the rig, so the crew cannot leave, as they were scheduled to do. Then specks of ash begin falling like snow. The rig was drilling into the Permian layer of the earth. That's when The Great Dying extinction event took place, wiping out most life on earth. It turns out that their drilling released microbes that are not good for living things, and crew member begin dying.

I watched it. You can choose caption language, English is available. Decent story, lousy ending, unless another season follows.

I can't change the language. I can't move the cursor there. All I can do is turn CC on or off.

What I didn't like was the rantings of that one guy. He was being totally unreasonable. As a senior worker, he should have known better. There was no way to do more than the boss was doing. Totally unrealistic. He should have been locked up.

I began watching a TV series from a foreign countr... (show quote)

There's a pretty good movie from 2000 called "Snatch" that has an ensemble cast including Brad Pitt, Jason Statham, Benicio Del Toro and Vinnie Jones.

Some of the characters in the movie lived in trailers (caravans) including Brad Pitt who played a bare knuckles boxer. The accents (cockney) in the movie made it difficult at times to understand what was being said.

Brad Pitt's accent was soooo bad that even the characters in the movie couldn't understand what he was saying.

I saw it on DVD and had a choice of subtitles. I could turn them on for all characters OR just for Brad Pitt...that's how bad his was.

I tried to watch Derry Girls on Netflix a while back. I'm sure 'tis a lovely show, but I had to just give up because of the thick accents.

I can usually understand accents if the people speak clearly, and if there's not a lot of background noise or music.

A long time ago in Africa, a lot of people died around a lake. The cause, a cloud of carbon dioxide bubbled up from the bed of the lake and drove out the oxygen in the surrounding lake shore.

There is English, then there is Scaish (Dundee, Scotland). I worked with a couple of guys from Dundee for 2 years. Wow, the accent was THICK! Would ask one of them to repeat his sentence several times! Lol, I will never forget the 1st time he asked for a 'torch' (flashlight in American English), while looking inside a furnace.

Yes, I've heard about that. They're now releasing and catching the carbon dioxide in at least one of those lakes. That has happened other places, as well. That lake is over a volcano, so the gas and the eruption are not all that surprising.

Many older folks have a high frequency hearing loss. I have worn hearing aids since I was 40! (for 45 years). I have an extreme high frequency loss. How does that impact me? Mainly I have difficulty in discriminating speech. I have explained my difficulty to others with hearing issues. Consonant sounds, (t,s,g,h,m,n, ...) are high frequency sounds. Vowels are low frequency. So, when someone says to me, "He went to the,..", I do not discriminate the "H" So I hear the "E". Confusion rains because I'm not sure if the person said, "he, she, we", me",. I do not discriminate the consonant. That makes comprehension of speech most difficult. It is not that I don't hear, I cannot discriminate. Hearing aids for a high frequency loss helps, but it is not a panacea. I have spent about $60,000 on hearing aids since I began wearing them. No, it is not covered by insurance. Good luck with closed caption. I have it on almost 100% of the time for TV. It helps. My digital hearing aids have a Blue Tooth device that connects to a USB port on the TV. After pairing the device with my hearing aids, sounds from the TV transmit directly to my hearing aids. I may then adjust the sound by one of 5 programs via my iPhone. It's pretty cool. I also use my iPhone for access to the programs without the Blue Tooth device. They also help. The cost:$7200 for the hearing aids, $300 for the Blue Tooth device. That's more expensive than my pizza at Vic's!

Yes, I know what you mean about high frequency loss. It's a natural progression. No hearing aid for me.
