Given how good the Iphone camera has become are any of the major companies like Nikon or Sony thinking of producing their own model ?
It would probably be better and it might get back customers, like me, who put their DSLRs in the drawer.

Why do you think they would be better? It’s not expertise that limits Apple or Samsung, it is merely the size limitations of the lenses and sensors. A traditional camera manufacturer would be faced with the same. Plus they would have to catch up on computational photography tech.
I think that ship has sailed. While I prefer to refer to them as "communicating cameras," the fact remains that these are telephones, that just happen to have cameras built into them, as well as myriad other features. Nikon, et al, would have to compete with Apple and Samsung on every front, not just on camera technology.

Samsung decided that building phones was the best use of their resources. Sony decided that supplying sensors to Apple was the best use of theirs. I continue to use my Pentax because multiple lenses provide what I need. Each entity/person makes their own decision.
I have absolutely no qualms about the images that come out of my phone.
I just prefer the ergonomics of a <D>SLR.
Key operator: prefer. I do use my phone for many pictures, especially panos, the camera does the stitching well.

Just think how silly we'd look holding our DSLR up to our ear.
I hesitate to make voice notes on my cameras because of that.

Well, then, I certainly don't want to look silly(er)! Remember the comedian who got guffaws whenever he held his shoe-phone to his ear?

Sony would have you believe that their Experia 1 v is capable of wonderful things. It's the first device to use a sensor with stacked photodiodes.

As a professional wildlife photographer I will stick by my 600 f4 lens to make a living, thank you.
And I will happily walk around, knowing my camera is always with me , one that takes superb pictures. And knowing no matter how hot it gets, my camera and assorted lenses will not seem to get heavier as the day goes on.

Apple has enough issues with their current product line...looking at you iMac...to worry about a phone.

Did you ever notice how even a bad true camera photo viewed on a iPhone or equivalent looks pretty decent? Smaller images are very forgiving.

I have an iPhone and Linux computer. I don’t know how Apple is doing with Mac, but they are selling enough iPhones to make money. I don’t understand your comment about “worry about a phone”.
