I’m thinking of one, but the weight would be an issue on the airlines. Oh wait, I’ll just have to charter my own jet! No wait, buy the jet to go with the lens. What was I thinking….

That's just PLANE silly. However, if it all works out, may I go to?

Lens is nice but I wouldn't want to shoot a Leica R body.

Anyone who buys this lens likely has a private jet already, so not an issue.

I used a Nikon 2000mm f11 mirror lens with my Nikon SLR to do a magazine cover color feature shoot on then NFL Eagles head coach Dick Vermeil, from atop the old Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia, Pa. during an NFL game in the rain. Made some great shots, but lugging that around with its heavy stand, I am sure contributed to my bad back and later back surgeries. Part of the risks of my job back then.

The largest Nikon consumer lens ever made. Depending on condition, if you can find one (there are still a few out there), they list from $32,000 USD down to $20,000 USD, real bargains compared to that Leica lens. LOL

Cheers and best to you.

That's almost 40 pounds, but I guess you were lucky it was a catadioptric lens. Think of the size and weight otherwise.

Lol, carrying it with its heavy stand and huge metal clamps to clamp it down, all around the top floor of the stadium for different angles, plus my full camera bag with the rest of my gear, was a real workout. But that high angle yielded some unique perspectives on Coach Vermeil throughout the game. I would be happy to share some of those shots here, but my copies of the magazine are stored away in a box in my storage locker, sorry. Should have had an assistant to help me, a lesson learned for future such jobs.

Used it once before that game to cover the Pope's first visit to Philadelphia as he gave his sermon to over a million folks outside at Logan Circle in Philly. I shot from a window high atop the tower of City Hall.

Cheers and best to you.

Unique lenses like this are not for sale, but you can buy if you wish. Most of the time a request made to E. Leitz are made and the optics giant will loan these specialty optics for projects, even help fund their shipment to locations. You would need to submit a proposal for the project and then you go from there. Leica is aware that few people need to 'own' this type of optics, better to let the maker provide them for use and then return after a project.

I still have my R-7 body, worked like a charm when I used it. Did a lot of images with it, loved it. Of course the R bodies were before digital photography, not that digital is better. I still use pre M lenses, M lenses and R lenses instead of digital lenses, most are superior to most digital lenes. Why one of my vary favorite lenses is the 8.5 cm f1.5 lenses built in 1936 for the German military. Super clean and sharp, the design is found in most modern pre and post digital Asian built lenses of similar design.

I will admit that I gave the Schnider built zoom lens that came with the group of R lenses for the Leica R body I purchased way back before the digital age, Leica never made a zoom lens, Wetzler regarded a zoom lens as inferior optically to what people now call 'prime' lenses, and they are 100% on with that.
