In Jasper, drive the road to Mount Edith Cavell. From the parking lot take the path Trail to the lake and view Angel glacier. There are other trails too. I think the second trail splits off from the first.

Make sure you check to see if the road is open as snow and repairs may affect its being open.

It was one of our favorite spots when we were in the Canadian Rockies about 20 ears ago.

Here is my list of sites that qualify as must-see, listed roughly south to north (Banff to Jasper):

Grassi Lakes in Canmore (actually south of Banff but worth considering)

Banff
Johnston Canyon
Fenland Trail (wetlands)
Sulphur Mountain (and gondola)
Marble Canyon
Ochre Beds and Paint Pots in Kootenay National Park
Moraine Lake
Tunnel Mountain Meadows, Bow River and hoodoos

Icefields Parkway - easily spend an entire day on this road

Many of the following are accessible off the Icefields Parkway

Lake Louise
Takakkaw Falls
Bow Lake & Crowfoot Glacier
Peyto Lake
Snowbird Glacier
Upper Waterfowl Lake
Mistaya Canyon
Bridal Veil Falls
Panther Falls
Parker Ridge
Athabasca Glacier in the Columbian Icefields
Maligne Canyon
Maligne Lake including Spirit "Island"
Medicine Lake
Tangle Falls
Athabasca Falls
Whistler's Peak
Medicine Lake
Maligne Canyon

Jasper

All of these sites are worthy of visiting, seeing, enjoying and photographing.

Have a great trip!

When you get to the Athabasca Glacier let me know how far back from the road it is. It was pretty close to the road when I went in 1978, and had receeded noticeably by 1982.

Been a believer in global warming ever since - long before it became popular.

A little way out of Jasper is Maligne Lake with Spirit Island. Sort of picture that pops up here, there and everywhere. Even had a copy of it on the fish and chip shop wall, but it looked so much better in the flesh.

WOW!! AWESOME photos!! Really love the beautiful lake thawing and the snow covered mountains reflecting on the dark blue water. Also, I am a train guy so I really like that capture. Still have working Lionel trains from my younger days. You have really been helpful and stimulate my enthusiasm even more. I can see why one would not want to leave that place in the world. Thank you so much. Terry

Beautiful photos can be taken at Vermillion Lakes, right on the edge of the town of Banff. The lakes, reflections, mountains reflected in the lake, tall brown grasses on the edges of the shore, elk, etc.

Every time I visit the Columbia Icefields it makes me feel very old. The marker showing the toe of glacier the year I was born is just behind that pile of gravel in the left of center foreground. The toe has moved a whole lot in 75 years!!

If you expand the download you'll see a group of snow cats on the middle of the glacier.
