I think Maxpixel is tracking this about right. The focus bracket settings will be different for different size scales. The coins are close up, requiring very fine focus changes. Then switching to the bottles, you will need to drastically increase the amount of focus changes. It's possible it was in fact working, but the amount of change is so small, on this scale, you would not notice it.

In the menu for focus bracketing you specify the number of exposures and the “spread” between them. This is trial and error, but for something like the coin, the spread would be small. For the bottles the spread would be greater, and if you included something very distant, the spread would be wider. You have to play with these settings.

By jove I think you've got it. It also seems that my issue was the spread and number of shots was not sufficient given the f-stop I was using (F2). I set up the bottle again and tried it with f/5.6. Also made the spread a bit wider from 4 to 5. Viola, success! Here's a composite image of the hot sauce bottles comprised of 17 shots, with the f-stop at 5.6 and the "focus increment" at 5.

Ok, so I wanted to play around with focus bracketing. After watching a few videos and how to do layer alignment and layer blending in PS, my first attempt seemed to come out ok, but my second attempt did not work so well. In the first two images, the first is a single image (R5 with 85mm f/2 @ f5.6) with the focus on the front of the coin. The second image is a composite of several images shot using the built in focus bracketing and the aligned and stacked in PS.

However for the second set of images, I could NOT get the focus point to move off the first bottle using focus bracketing no matter what I did. The resulting image was made by taking a series of images and manually moving the focus point. (Im going to post the images in a reply to this post because I don't want this post moved to gallery).

Any ideas why, in the image of the bottles, I could not get the focus point to move off the first bottle when using focus bracketing?
Ok, so I wanted to play around with focus bracketi... (show quote)

Is it possible the camera was inadvertently set to autofocus on the 2nd set?

The camera is set to AF on all sets. See my last post. I think the issue is solved.

Glad to hear it was resolved.

I find I can do 10 or more hand held focus bracketed shots in under a second, then merged in PS. With image stabilization, a tripod is only needed in very low light. It’s an amazing utility on the R5 once you learn how to use it.

The IS on this thing is amazing. I did an experiment with a focus calibration target and found I could get very acceptably sharp images handheld at much slower shutter speeds than I could use with my 5D Mark IV. Don't think I could get 8 stops, but 6 for sure with the 24-105 lens.

Nice work, and I learned something. Thanks!

I'll guess this is how it's done, not AF...

Kinda obvious. Focus bracketing is NOT focus retargeting. "Bracketing" (focus or exposure) means calibrated variations from an anchor point.

If you let AF run and also move the focus target then you are NOT bracketing, but rather youre establishing additional new possible anchor points.

Same with exposure. If you alter the EV or the ISO youve "moved the goal posts", eliminating any reference point around which to run a bracket.

Soon enuf, some Hawgster will want to know why focus bracketing and exposure bracketing wont run simultaneously, and the UHH Genius Collective will ask him if he has the current latest firmware, did he try cleaning his lens contacts, and is it an OEM battery.

You forgot the camera reset, just to be sure ...

the camera has to be in auto focus mode for in camera focus bracketing to work.
