Google support?

My wife’s 2009 iMac has died. I had a 2013 MacAir I thought she could use. It is running IOS Yosemite. I have tried to set up her Gmail account and have hit a brick wall. When I try to set up the account it says "the app doesn't comply with Google's Oauth 2.0 policy”. She has had gmail for several years. She used to get it on her 2009 iMac. It would seem there would be a way for her to get it on a newer 2013 MacAir? This is really a problem because now she can only get her email on her iPhone. No matter where I look I can’t find a way to actually communicate with Google. I can’t find a phone number for general support. Nor can I find a chat feature. Any email I send comes back as undeliverable. The brick wall seems inpenetrable. Has anyone had any experience with support from Google?

Google mail is VERY persnickety about what it will accept.
Mail senders (programs, not people) need some kind of authenticity for Google to "receive" the emails.
A royal pain in the butt.

You may have to upgrade the Mac air...

From what I read, the MacAir of mine can only be upgraded to version 10.15 "Catalina". I think I'm out of luck on upgrading. The iMac that died was running version 10.? and handled gmail just fine for several years. The iMac I am writing on has version 10.14 and handles gmail very nicely. I think the problem is that Google changed their security requirements after the gmail accounts were originally set up on our systems. So, I could be wrong, but I think we were sort of "Grandfathered in" with our gmail accounts.

I have Gmail accept my RoadRunner email, so all my email is available in Gmail. Maybe you can have Hotmail, or something else, accept Gmail. Don't expect help from Google. It's too big to care.

YouTube might have a solution.

UPDATE---Thanks to all who have tried to help. There are many good videos and online instructions which show how to accomplish the task but the OS is different and the steps don't work. I was able to set up the gmail account manually but it would not communicate with Google. I spent almost two hours with a superb Apple tech who could look at my screen and even with his expertise we could not get past the problems. Basically the MacAir is too old to set up the account properly with the newer Google restrictions. And upgrading is not an option. The machine can open most websites but not some with newer security measures. It's not just this machine. My iMac is only 5 years old and my bank tells me my browser is outdated. Other sites say the same thing. Planned obsolescence abounds.

That is so common! I'll find directions, and everything works fine until Step 4. What? There is no "Save" button!
