AF-S Nikkor 28-70mm autofocusing problem

I have the old, heavy version. about six months ago it became undependable in autofocus. I can still set to manual and use it, but doing a lot of shots with three very young grandkids who move around pretty fast (ages 1, 2, and 4). Not sure if it is worth having it fixed, and if so, where.

My first suggestion would be to check if Nikon USA will or can repair it -- then the question would be cost. The real answer to the question is what exactly repairs are required -- ie, what is the underlying issue(s). (That would probably require sending it in for an inspection.) Taking a quick look, a used replacement (from sources like B&H or eBay) is likely in the $600-$650 range. Other repair sources are regularly noted here on the forum but my only experience is with Nikon itself.

I had one a long way back. It was a $300 - $400 repair. A few years later I had the same issue and bought the newer version, 24-70 'E'. The repair was good for several years, so it may be worth it depending on the cost.

Are you sure it's the lens? Have you tried the lens on a different camera body? Alternately, have you verified other lenses focus correctly on the same camera?

Re repair cost, if it is the lens, you can get an estimate for repair then compare that to replacement cost. That should give you some idea of which path to choose.

Old lens. Contact Rick Riggins on here and see what he says. I doubt Nikon will have parts, but it's a free call. Best of luck.
